Normally I use a canon DSLR with a selection of lens. It takes great photos but tends to get left behind unless I am going with the explicit purpose of taking photos due to the weight.

I am looking for a relatively cheap way of just shooting the odd photo at family events etc. My main bugbear with compact cameras is they take terrible flash photos as they use direct flashes.

Has anybody come across any compact cameras that can do bounce flash (or just do decent low light indoor photos) for reasonable money. All the ones I have seen with a hot shoe are >£400.

Thanks

Quite a few mirrorless cameras have that flippy floppy popup flash design where you can hold the flash back in an upright position. They're not "compact" as such, although still smaller than a DSLR.

+1

RX100 MK1 is £249.99 or RX100 MK2 is £349 (with hot shoe) from John Lewis.

Bought a Panasonic Gx1 micro four thirds body and the 14-42 power zoom for the wife to replace a compact for similar reasons.
Was a couple of hundred second hand a couple of years ago and has a pop up flash that can be made to point anywhere between direct and straight up.

Other than missing a viewfinder and questionable continuous af there's not too much to miss from a dslr. It's small enough for coat pockets and her bag too.

The 14-45 is ok and certainly helps with size and weight, the 20mm f1.7 pancake would be even better but she wanted a 'zoom'
