OK so, I'm seriously looking at a Cayman, my budget allows a 2007-ish 2.7 model (£13k)

my question is, over the course of, say 3 years , how much can I expect that car to loose?
Assuming it is kept well, no silly mileage etc.

I'd look at the difference in price between a 2007 Boxster and a 2004 Boxster on PH/AutoTrader and use that as a rough guide...

Assuming the car is in good condition and average mileage relative to the year, I would be suprised if it dropped by any more than £3-4K

Thanks chaps.
Well that's reasonable.

What are people's thoughts on the effect of the new 4-cyl engines? Will the older 6'es become a bit more desirable?

It certainly wont harm them will it! I would expect residuals on the 981 to improve, but they will still depreciate.

A nearly new Cayman GTS is looking like a very smart buy right now!

A 2007 Boxster 2.7 bought now will be a 12 year old car in 3 years time and look underpowered compared with all other rmodels. I wouldn't expect any miraculous immunity from the general laws of depreciation.

I am not sure that the power output is that relevant. A 2.7RS is worth what, 500k? And thats got a measly 210bhp.

An interesting comment from the other thread,

most people go for the dfi cars now, Porsches sweet spot and bomb proof engines.

10 year old run of the mil cars are a hard sell.

But I'm not buying a boxster. I feel the Cayman will retain its value better.

And dont forget that Porsches do seem to defy the general laws of depreciation already.

Not really true. And you need to factor in the potential ruinning costs.

Well yes but they do retain values significantly better than most cars.

I'm used to "Ruining costs" I've had an 80's Ferrari...!!

But how many Gen 1s vs Gen 2s produced? Also Gen 2 was released early 2009? At a time when everyone thought the world was going to end and hardly looking to splash the cash on a brand new sports car...

I recently bought a 987.2 and spent some time researching values and depreciation beforehand, and have continued to do so after purchase and the bottom end of the 987.2 has been hovering around the £20k mark for a year now.

I haven't looked in as much detail at 987.1, but they seem to still be around the £15k for something clean, down to £12k for the leggy stuff.

As other have said, the Cayman has got volume on it's side, it sold in tiny number compared to the Boxster.

the point was if you have £15k/£20k to spend what will you go for ? most will say the gen 2

Imo I think the 17k Gen 1 market is dead, where the 987.2 cars are hard to find and sell quite easy.

the higher tax unless you go sub march 2006 is also a killer on cheap cars as people won't pay the higher tax, the gen 2 tax is cheaper.

254co2 on the gen 1 S is a killer on tax hence the bad sales, people posting worried about loosing 3k in a few years will NOT pay £500 to tax it. !

IT's killed that 2006 to 2009 car imo and hence in the other thread no one asking after a 987.1 2007 car

Yeh I'd agree with you there in VFM terms of Gen1 vs Gen2. Not sure about the tax thing though which is boring anyway and covered in the other thread. Personally I'd rather have a 13-15k Gen 1 and keep the difference (than get a bottom gen2 which will be close to 7-10k more) in a bork fund. Once you get to 17k+ the gen1s are a bit tougher to justify and I have no idea how dealers have some in the mid to high 20s. Surely a cheap cayman on the hartech plan is as good as it gets for modern fun?
