There is a car parked on my running route that has intrigued for a while. I did the free public checks online and noticed it wasn’t taxed or SORNED, no MOT, no insurance and is a completely different colour (correct model etc). It could last have legally been on the road two years ago. I’m reasonably confident it’s still in use.

It would appear to be parked on private land (not 100% sure though, it's on a strip of tarmac between the pavement and the property entrance), so most of the above are moot points. However, how can a car be neither taxed or SORNED several years? As far as I can tell from the DVLA site they automatically apply an £80 penalty (once?) if a car is neither taxed or SORNED, but what happens after that? I’ve always wondered how cars can manage to fall into the ‘black hole’ of having no tax/insurance or MOT, given that we have an automatic system and, as far as I can tell, no obvious loophole to exploit.

It may have been untaxed since before the current system came in. I had an old Mini pickup that wasn't taxed or SORNed as it had been off the road for years.
