On my frequent journeys up and down the M6 I have been using the new four lane section that runs from just south of Stafford down to jct 11.

The frustrating thing is that the number of drivers who totally ignore the inside two lanes and just motor on in the third lane totally oblivious to one and sometimes two empty lanes!

The other thing is that you know how it can be on 3 lane motorways where a lorry in lane 0ne is doing 57mph and another in lane two is doing 57.1mph taking forever to overtake which then forces all the 70mph + traffic to funnel into the third lane, well on the four lane stretch you now get three lorries abreast forcing all other traffic into lane four!
Surely speed restricted vehicles should be kept to lanes one and two or there is not much point in having four lanes!

Same situation further south around Brum. Drivers seem to have an aversion to using the hard shoulder when it’s running. In the past I’ve been able to travel all the way from J4 to J8 using the hard shoulder wherever and stick to the posted limits merrily passing the queing stop start traffic in the other three lanes

General driving standards that have to be expected nowadays I'm afraid.

I created a thread nearly two months ago about a recent motorway jaunt I had undertaken:

Just dial up 70ish on the cruise and sit in lane one

British drivers just cannot figure out 4-lane motorways. Does not compute.

It was much better when lane 3 was the "Fast Lane".

For some odd reason, the only place I've seen it work regularly is the 6-lane bit of the M25. Probably because it's always so busy that closet proper drivers stop being mlms for a few miles.

It doesn't work too badly on the 4-lane section of the M1 north of J25. I use it regularly and have very rarely seen a HGV in lane 3. Lane discipline is of course appalling but it doesn't seem to slow it down much except at very busy times.

They put land mines in lane 1 and 2, they do on the M1 near Luton anyway.

What strikes me as odd on the four lane section in Staffordshire is no hard shoulder at all.

When we get the inevitable stack up on that stretch, which will happen as sure as night follows day, how do the emergency boys get through ?

I think we should just admit defeat give in to the mupets and allow undertaking on motorways with more than 3 lanes , it works ok in the US ????
