What would you buy?

The basic premise is, if any of us (with young kids) were in the fortunate position to buy a car now with a view to keeping it and passing it on to our children when they reach say 21 what would you buy with a notional and slightly more realistic budget than the Supercar thread of say £40k

From top of my head....maybe a Ferrari mondial? 3.0 32V QV low miles in a rarer colour like blue?

Not exactly a 'classic' as such, but modern classics cars like RS cosworth Escort, or a TVR? all i would say will be worthwhile investments and give pleasure to drive now and in many years to come, and are getting rarer.

I would say the Ferrari being the best in terms of investment, if you up your budget to £49K you can get a late model mondial 3.4T with 300hp and they never made that many, lots of people are saying these are the only Ferrari yet to sky rocket in price...

I'm very tempted myself, but I'd have to sell my E-type to fund one, and I'm still far to attached to that to let it go..

With £40k and a prospect of retaining some value for a couple of decades time, I'd be looking at an Aston DB9 / Vantage, a Porsche 911 993 (last of the air cooled 911's), or a very decent new Land Rover Defender.

I'd do the same or similar, I certainly wouldn't buy a car in order to give something of value to my young children, if I had any.

I've two kids and I'd want to prohibit them from selling the car on when I die to force them to use it and remember me when I'm dead. So a pair of R32 Skylines, not a true supercar but as close as I can get for £20k assuming I want something half decent.

If I had to buy only one, I think I'd go for a DB9. I'd rather a v12 Ferrari or pre Audi lambo but I'm not going to get one for £40k.

Stunning cars, prefer the Sagaris but then sadly needs another £20K cash on top of the value of a T350C!

As for the other posted comments on Gold purchasing, sure a good investment potential, but you cant drive it and have fun with it!! so a little boring sat looking at your gold stash! not very pistonheads is it?

gold, been the done it. no maintenance.no storage neede, tax free, and you can give it away without the tax man knowing. not asmuch fun though. but any investment can go down aswell as up. its just a gamble in the end.

However i was in this fortunate position last year and bought (one of) my dream car, a Honda NSX.

My son is not getting his grubby mitts on it when hes 21 though....

You can buy a half decent one for ~£18k, but you mark my words, they are going the same way as the 3000 and the E types. A few years and they will be £30/£40k upwards.

Super cool car but im not sure you can still get one for 40k. And the structure rusts under the panels, very pricey to fix!

I'd be buying up Imprezas and returning modified ones to standard spec.
