I have been looking at induction kits. I was thinking about going for the hurricane (£160), however it is quite expensive compared to the Pipercross (PK091) (£80) or the K&N (57i) (£50).

What is the difference between them? Is the hurricane really worth the money or am I working the prices out wrong?

The Hurricane is from Eliseparts and the others new from fleabay.

Are there any others I should consider?

is the Pipercross a closed airbox with cold feed? - if so then go for that - thats the important bit

ah - right - no, dont bother with that then. I was thinking of the Pipercross Vector (somthing like that) where it has an enclosed air box like the Hurricane.

Id stick with the Hurricane then - its still a bargain at 1/2 the price of an ITG

you get a few bhp and a noice noise...typically if you fit a sports exhaust, sports cat ot cat replacement pipe, and induction kit to a std Elise you get around 130-35bhp ...it revs a bit free-er and sounds great

ordered my Hurricane today so hopefully it should be here for the weekend

With the B&C zorst it's gonna sound frickin' great. Roll on Spring & Summer! Incidentally bogie, whats the (ballpark) breakdown on the bhp+ on the 3 components (zorst, induction, cat rep/sports cat)?

I am also looking at a Larini zorst and with the hurricane I think it will sound sweet.

no idea - it varies from car to car. I was on a RR day a couple of years ago and we had about 15 cars there in various specs (been repeated since with diff cars) and you would have a std car just with an exahust making 128bhp, then another that had 2 'bits' doing the same, then another with all 3 doing 136bhp (my car at the time) etc....each engine is different

I dont think Ive ever seen results of anyone actually bolting them on one at a time and running them up on the road. I know when my car was std and I had it at various RR days it was 128(exhaust) 132(induction) 136(sports cat) ...however I never had a 'base run' so my car could have been 126bhp from the factory

judging by other results Ive seen since then, I reckon a safe bet is 3-4bhp per bolt on....which is fair enough...just dont believe the marketing bull that some of the companies use '+10%' or '8bhp' etc ...if you added these all up, then with 3 bolt ons youd be up to 150bhp for about a grand.....strange that seeing as every other K tuner in the country will tell you that you need either hotter cams or ported head (or both) to make that figure

...anyways, have fun....its always a good buzz the 1st time you drive your car with a new exhaust/induction kit etc - the sound is great and it feels like you are in a new car ...it also 'sounds' like its going faster....which is where all the hype comes from, with the excitement of new induction kit owners posting up' wow - its so much faster' etc ...please dont expect your car to turn into a rocket....but it will sound great .

a lot of interesting and commonsense stuff... and then said "...please dont expect your car to turn into a rocket....but it will sound great."

Nice one, wasn't after a definitive, more out of interest than anything else as I know you've been doing mods of various guises for a long time on the 'liz.

Have no expectation that the car will suddenly assume 340R dynamics, but am looking forward to a bit more GRRR and maybe some better throttle response. A few more horses and a bit more torque couldn't hurt either.

LOL ... - that comment was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek, based on threads that spring up from time to time across various BBS'es......the way some people go on about imagined power increases from the smallest thing I find amusing - thats all ...its misleading really as other owners can see the thread and think they will knock 2 secs of their 0-60 time by fitting a £350 induction kit etc (and therefore reinforcing the manufacturers hype), whereas in reality you need about 80bhp and £5K spending to have that effect !

you cant beat the sound of a Hurricane though with a sports exhaust etc - i miss my induction kit....it made the engine sound real nice and deep...I have a modded std aribox wit K&N panel filter in now, strange that it still makes 220odd bhp with a £20 panel filter..according to a lot of ads you need to spend hundreds to 'flow enough air for 200bhp' etc

Hurricane is the one to have - sounds great under bigger throttle openings and you hardly notice the difference when at motorway speeds on a 'balanced' throttle.

Bogie, out of interest why did you change your hurricane? End of life or an informed decision?

I have a supercharger conversion on my car - due to al the pipe work/plumbing differences etc an aftermarket induction kit doesent fit - would have to be custom made...anyways its noisy enough now without an induction kit !

The other option is to just drop a K&N panel filter in the lotus airbox. Apparently thats good enough...

Hi Mark

I suggest getting the Hurricane, best "bang for your buck"

I have one fitted and its one of the best mods I have done. I have this fitted along with a 52mm Throttle body, CRP and Chris Neil Exhaust, it sounds wicked!

Fitting only takes an hour (for a novice) and if you want to see one you are more than welcome to pop to South Shields and have a gander at my motor, might even fit it for you if your not keen on doing it for yourself.

Are your new brakes any good? I was at Dan's on saturday chatting about engine upgrades.....ummm more power!

Yeah I am going to go for it, but I might wait and get the Larini zorst first as there is 20% off at the moment with the NYLOC group buy.

The brakes are great, a massive improvement already. Money well spent and Dan & his dad did a great job
