Hi Guys

Wonder if you can help me. Ever since David Appleby Engineering did my big service in October last year my gear changes in 1st and 2nd when cold have been very stiff. Now since then I put it down to the first symptoms of needing a new clutch (cars done nearly 60k on the original) However since doing some research on a replacement clutch it seems this is not a symptom of that.

So, what would cause this issue? There is no question it started after that service? BTW I'm not after blaming or shaming someone for something, just want to know the cause, be sure of the steps to fix and if relevant give that person the opportunity to put it right. I've tried called DAE but they're not answering so reverting to trusty PH smile

Pre-2007 cars suffered from stiff 1st -2nd changes. The fix was a different gearbox oil and a linkage change. The oil had the greatest effect.
Wrong oil?

Guess - wrong oil.

The change made was to a thinner oil. Maybe they put the thick oil back in?

James from DAE contacted me, really good of him as he's currently at Rockingham preparing for the GT Championship this weekend.

He confirmed they put 75W-90 fully synthetic gear oil which is OEM specification. However he suspects BOT270A may have been used before as that was introduced as part of a technical bulletin for cars which were experiencing this issue.

And in a proper "if Carlsberg made Aston Indies" moment, he has offered to carry out an oil change using BOT270A free of charge. I think its a clear indication of whether a company cares about its customers and really does believe in the value of good customer service in how they deal with issues / unhappy customers.

Surely they would check on AMDS that the advisory had been carried out and then continue with the oil that was used before?

Oh well, you got the right result in the end!

75w90 was the original specification. It was updated to BOT270A to alleviate the stiff-shifting concerns.

Before James contacted me I spoke to another well respected Indy and was told that put in Syntrax?

It's not as simple as that.

There are many grades of Syntrax 75w90, so take the very best / most suited to the Graz 6 speed trans and compare the spec sheet of that to the BOT and see what you come up with as being of significant difference. Then compare the cheapest grade Syntrax with the best grade Syntrax and see indeed the significant difference.

The devil is in the detail with oil grade just like anything else, like a flywheel, a couple of flywheels might look the same but what is the balancing std? What is its heat treatment, what is the quality of billet it was machined from, what slave cylinder is it mated too?
