Tuscan Exhaust Sound on Top Gear
Discussion
Hi guys, I am new here and have been considering buying a tvr.
I have been watching all the various clips of the tuscan on the net and most of the exhaust notes (decatted, CCC etc) are more peaky and shrill sounding as the revs increase, but without much bass.
I prefer a deep bass note (someone i know has a cerbera v8- awesome). But i want a tuscan cos its prettier and a targa, but i want the v8 sound!!!
Anyway, on the topgear review with Tiff Needel when he blips the throttle at the start the sound is amazing! its like a v8...what exahust is this? if anyone knows can they please tell me!
Also later in the clip when hes cruising the engine is rumbling (deep bass noise) in the background. Basically i prefer this as opposed to no base/no bottom end and then a really loud scream at higher rpm (which i find a bit too much- eg. that crazy loud decat clip of the guy overtaking 2 cars- it goes from totally silent cruising to sudden 200 decibels!). I know many of you prolly like that, but I wouldnt want to own a car sounding like that..
The top gear clip is:

Thanks in advance,
Dave
PS: yes I will go and test drive some tuscans soon to hear them in person- I am waiting for the weather to get a bit better so i dont crash!

You really can't go on the noise from TV or the web. They don't do the engine note any justice at all.
Just compare the F1 tinny shriek on the box with the ear splitting bassy scream as one goes past you live! It makes your chest hurt.
Just for reference, I went to see one yesterday (which I subsequently bought!) which has CCC and De-cat.
WHAT A NOISE!!! I love the 'classic' V8 sound as much as the next man/woman but this was something else! Difficult to explain in words without dribbling!
Definitely drive/hear some - as soon as possible. Even standard they are anything but thin and weedy! But the CCC thing - ".....these go to eleven!"

that was mine. it wasn't silent cruising believe me.. it's just the wind noise that makes it so. But yeh.. then it was 200 decibels. I agreed with you.. too loud, and they were taken off after a week and the cats put back on. I prefer the normal sound (I still have CCCs). It's more bassy/rumbly and less mental 'blaaaaaaa' like some sort of mental nascar.
The problem with a sound like that is it goes straight to your heart and you think... wow.. I want that. Then a week later as you are driving on motorway and through town and all you can hear is 'blaaaa'. you just think..hmm.. it's a bit muppety this. well I did anyway. each to their own.

Nelly, just for you, here's a clip of me & my Tusc... sorry - me and your Tusc - I was still running it in at the time (i.e. shifting at 3500), so there's none of the top-end howl, but I don't doubt for a second you'll be watching this every day for the next two weeks.
To judge the volume of the car, note that a Morgan/something drives past going the other way and you can't even hear it! www.sleepy-fish.com/ph_vids/DeCat_and_CCC_cans.wmv
BlackBison, CCC + de-cat is insanely loud (but I love it
). However, one of the best things it gives the car is a real low-down rumble at idle and low RPM. From what I've gleaned from listening to numerous other cars, I think you might be able to get the rumble without some of the Nascar rasp/howl by sleeving the original cans and getting a de-cat. Could be wrong, but that might just work.powerlord said:

You could be right. Time will tell.
Depends on whether I have to keep saying "What?" in normal conversation and whether the neighbours are still speaking to me!
At least it's reversible! (The noise that is, not the hearing damage!)

The thing I found is that when I'm pottering around, the car's usually doing 1500-1800 RPM or so, with very little load on the engine, so it's not all that noisy; it's just a lovely burble. When thrashing it, I really want that noise to turn into something approximating air being torn apart at a sub-atomic level.
The only time it becomes an annoyance at all is on long (2hr+) motorway trips at constant high RPM. And that's what the stereo's for (or, more to the point, an iPod with a decent set of ear plugs)
