Porsche 964 origin on chassis number

Hi,

I've been offered a 964 Carrera 4 Cabrio and I was doing my homework on the cars' history. With what I know now, and can find on the internet, I can't verify if it's a European car, or a US import.

Here's what I think to know from the car:

The VIN number starts with the European WP0ZZZ, and not the US/CAN WP0AA. But it's a 964-540 model type. Which comes up as 'Carrera 4 Cabriolet C03 (California only)'. How do these two match up??

Apart from that it has a speedometer in kmh and miles combined, and it has the US type rear bumper with the smaller plate space. But those could have been changed over the years? The owner tells me it's an English car that's been in America. It's registered in Belgium now and it is LHD.

Anyone an expert on this matter?

C02 is a US car.

C02 signifies a catalytic converter. Here are all of the options on that car.

The C02 in this case identifies the country code i.e USA and signifies standard equipment for that market. Cat's were mandatory in the USA for model year 1990, they were not an option.

The under bonnet sticker photo shows very much a non-WPOZZZ VIN which reinforces that it's a US spec car.

On the bonnet sticker it reads C02 = Rest of USA ( in 1991 became all of USA)

CO3 = California

Indeed, I only realised that after making this post. The chassisnumber on the current Belgian registration documents is the WP0ZZZ variant of the exact same car though. Which feels a bit weird? I can't imagine them always deciphering the US chassis numbers to the European equivalent when imported? Should be either normal or fishy then..

Have you checked the VIN on the chassis itself? It's stamped just behind the spare wheel.

Any idea what "E. VIN" and the "(01)" after the VIN mean? Did the car get a some sort of European-format VIN when it was registered in Belgium?
