Are these really that difficult to find with low miles, low keepers and in mint condition?!

I mean mileage under 60-70k in big bumper form without any rust and in top condition. I seem have seen a few good ones at around the £5-6k mark but really not many.
Considering one of these or an e30 bmw.

The mk2s seem to be climbing very rapidly. I honestly had one 3-4 years ago with 70k miles in tip top condition and paid less than £3k!
I feel part of the reason is that they were a superior car to the mk1 gtis and are more user friendly and practical still

There will be low mile/owner car's out there

But, anyone that has one would be a bit silly to sell at the moment as prices on mk2's are on the up and should continue to rise for a while

I'm in the same boat, looking to buy a Golf GTi Mk2 16v and was wondering if the mileage really matters that much? I'm struggling to find any under 100k.

I've heard they are very reliable and last for ages. Plus most that are over this amount of miles have been worked on ..

I Commute by train to work so will only use this occasionally on weekdays and weekends.

What do you reckon is the max amount of miles I could get away with?

under 100k is pretty hopefull for a car thats getting on for 30 years old

rust is the main worry , oily bits are mostly available and easy to fix so just find a straight rust free car and enjoy it

My '84 GTI did 200,000 and a bit miles by the time it disappeared from the DVLA in 1999. No major rust either.

Therefore getting 1 with 175,000 on it will not do anybody any harm. In any case anything currently reading under 100,000 is almost certainly clocked. I could have removed 100,000 from mine and nobody would have noticed.

They are such good looking cars.
Lower mileage stuff - sun 60k or so is now worth quite a lot of money. I've seen low mileage examples sell for more than £10k quite easily. I think they are entering collections or those people who want to enjoy over the weekend. Far superior cars to the mk1!

I had 2 8vs and a 16v, a 1.4 and GTD.

Yes fun but are they really that special against other cars, not really. Nowadays considering how much you have to pay for one there are better options out there, I had more fun in a 2000 1.8t Audi A4 Quattro.

I wouldn't concentrate on mileage, the problem is scene tax has added a lot to price, a fix a upper is good idea. Maybe have a look at imports too.

I've been into mk2's for getting on 15 years now. Think I've had 7 in various iterations. Having been without one for a few years I'm now back in the market. My personal opinion is that the prices of average cars has stabilised this year after a few years of climbing, however people are asking increasingly silly money for mint/low owner/special cars. I don't know whether they are selling or not though. From what I can see £2-2.5k seems to buy a nice tidy useable example. A mate of mine had a valver which was on 260k when he bought it and it went fantastically well. Mine was on 140k with no issues.
I've decided to go down a different route now and am looking at importing a Jetta coupe from Germany where they can still be had for €5-700 rather than the £3k+ here. Obviously not including the utterly ruined example on eBay currently which is already at £250 eek

A really, really good one with freaky low mileage like that is probably a £10k car now.

Not just MK2s, but any hot hatch born in the late 80s / early 90s. More dealers doing their speculating thing again to drive prices up. Private sellers always jump on the wagon too - stick a car up for sale with a couple of extra zeros and see who bites, because someone always does. Hence why we've seen RS Turbos going for £15K - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/281808904350?clk_rv... which was a turd of a car in every single way (imo) but because: low miles - it suddenly becomes a Halo car. The MK2 was hardly a paragon of excellence either, but it was at least considerably better made than the Escort and in the case of the 16V, faster too!

Fools and their money are easily parted!

I had my fill of MK2s back in the 90s. They were great fun - in the 90s - and well made - in the 90s - but dynamically they are positively horse and cart now, and they look TINY on the roads now, like a Hot Wheels toy car. I wouldn't want to be T Boned by an SUV in a MK2, that's for sure!

MK2's are commanding very strong prices.
One of the reasons in particular for their rarity especially the 16V is that many have been bought by people who are racing in the 16V championship at Castle Combe which has been running for 5-6 years now.

I've got one of the last big bumper 16V's in Alpine White. I have kept it looking completely standard except for the OE Corrado G60 BBS alloys which have a diamond cut lip but have kept all the original interior although I track the car every year with the seats out.

It was featured many years ago in VW Driver and Performance VW mag and was and is one of the quickest 'road going' 16V's built at the time by Tim Stiles in the era of GTI Engineering, BR Motorsport, Autocavan and AmD.

The car is currently undergoing a bit of restoration mainly under the bonnet (as the body work is in great order) and the engine is being having a refresh / rebuild with the old staff from Tim Stiles. The balanced 6A 2 litre block has had a new second hand pair of pistons and new rings as it's not possible to buy new pistons except for oversize. We built the car originally in 2002 but I have owned the car since 1995.

It currently is still running the original build from then and has done more miles at Combe on the road!

It has too much to list here on what's been done but it is essentially a lightweight 200+bhp hatch weigh under 1000 kilo's which makes for fun.

I cant get rid of it as my son wants it now but for what it owes me and the fun and performance on track that it gives you just can't beat them.

I know my car has extensive provenance and lineage and you just can't easily put a value on it but in another 10 years it will be worth a considerable amount if not now!

If you've got a good one or shell keep hold of it.
