Had a call from Marks and Spencer money this morning (I know it's HSBC).

They are unhappy that I have a credit balance.

It came about because I balance transferred from another card to help fund part of my garden project. Due to an accident by my supplier my coping stones will not be ready for another 3 weeks and hence don't need to be paid.

They want to return the credit to the other card company. I have refused as I will lose part of my balance transfer fee. They will not transfer it to another card nor to my current account.

I will be spending this credit very shortly but they are not happy! In fact she put the phone down on me.I was not rude or in any way improper... I simply refused to agree.

One reason cited is that should my card be used fraudulently is that I would not be covered for the credit amount only any debit amount.

OK, I didn't know this....or had not considered it.

OK....it is against their policy but to offer no choices or than refund or spend it in a week seems wrong to me.

Get them to send you a cheque and close your card. Sounds like they don't want your business...

Had this argument with Capital One many imes, then Barclaycard closed my accou t after 20yrs with zero warning for the same reason.

They really don't like it, been given lot's of BS but no idea what the actual reason is.

MBNA will pay any credit balance to an account of your choice.

I've had this problem once with Amex. The reason they gave was that holding a credit balance contravenes money laundering regulations. Makes sense.
