For example; in my working day, in addition to endorsable offences, I also ticket for no seat belt, mobile phone/drive use, parking on a clearway, parking in unrestricted road at night without position lights, etc etc...

All these offences can have serious repercussions, if it goes wrong....even though some motorists might not think so...

edited to make it more simple! and to please my friend plotless

Virtually any action can have "serious repercussions if things go wrong".

Hi Plotloss.
That attitude is difficult to defend.
What you are saying is that setting fire to a building is ok as long as there is no one inside?

Burglary is ok to someone who can afford the loss?

Dangerous driving is ok as long as no one gets hurt.

What about 'preventative' pro active policing...?

There'd be a victim if it goes wrong...

Why should exceeding an arbitary limit be an offence?

If you managed to drive from A-B out of your skull and hit no-one why should that be?

It is difficult to justify I grant you and its going to be difficult to defend my second point above but I am well up for the freeing of society.

Actually regards the second point, if you drove drunk and did hit someone then the fact that you got drunk and then drove knowing the risks then that should be a huge mitigating factor. If you kill someone then it should be life imprisonment and proper life as in until you die.

This constant protecting from ones self path that we are well advanced down is ultimately going to harm us far more than allowing us to learn from our mistakes.

Carzee used to speak of a wholesale unenlightenment of the people and it is without doubt coming. I dont expect a No victim = no crime stance to solve this but I think its highly preferable to the conclusion we will meet if we carry on.

Oh and by the way your point about arson, there is a victim, a financial victim and that would therefore still be a crime. Speeding and even drink driving without incident harms no one at all.

In what context Street?

Why would pro-active sentencing be any less of a deterrent?

Calm down with your shouting.

Speeding was an example you could remove speeding and replace it with mobile phone useage or seat belts and the post would still be in context and on topic.

Now if you have something constructive to add...

I do understand what you are trying to say Plotloss.
It's just that there ARE many crimes which would fit your initial premise.

I totally agree about the controlling factor though.
Remember "The Minority Report"

Its always a difficlut subject, talking baout restricting/monitoring peoples movements in the interests of crime prevention vs freedom of movement etc.

Take the ID card scenario as an example. Some say that " I dont mind. If you've got nothing to hide ...blah blah"
This is a supposed attempt at foiling / reducing terrorism, but what will it do?

It will control/invade privacy of the masses, whilst doing nothing to bother terrorists whatsoever.
Its always the majority that suffer for the crime of the minority.

Enforce away. I cannot believe that I am the only one who tries to abide by all other parts of the RTA but ignores the bit about the speed limit. Any other takers?

It seems to me that many people on this site are quite happy to jump up and down and have laws rigidly enforced where other people are concerned but not quite so keen when it's them that's broken the law and want it overlooked.

[quote various PHers]
"Yeah, I got the TVR up to 150mph the other day on the M1 and this dumb copper pulls me over and gives me a ticket when all I did was do twice the speed limit on a public highway, it's SO out of order, when the other day I saw some stupid bint park on a double yellow line which is absolutely disgusting, we should lock these morons up and throw away the key." How are those two examples victimless crimes?

Because if something I do does not deleteriously affect someone else, then it's none of their bloody business, that's why.
