I was driving along the M27 last night and about to join the M3 heading towards London, when I heard a loud bang from the right rear side of the car. Sh1t! A puncture, I thought. The feeling at 110km (sorry, no miles in the 320iS) was not that pleasant. Managed to coast it towards the hard sholder with no further worries, only to see the sign "No Hard Shoulder for 400 yds" approaching rapidly.

Slammed on the ancors and got the car tucked in, just before the diagonal white lines were to disappear. Put on the indicators, came out of the car - luckily the 320iS is LHD - so I came out near the armco. Got the emergency triangle out and run about 100 yds back. Put the triangle on the hard sholder and called the BiB.

I have a spare wheel, but the thought of changing it, with my arse hanging out in the lane and all those artics passing by was not an appealing one.

The BiB realised that the situation was quite serious as the BMW was not blocking the junction, but was sufficiently close to the lane to present danger. Soon (read 15 heart stopping minutes as I thought that my track slag was going to be taken out by a lorry) a shiny new X5 appeared with the blues-and-twos.

The BiB was very polite and shielded me as I reversed back on the hardsholder, keeping the car as close to the armco as possible. Changed the burst tyre within 3 mins and was on my happy way back to London.

Cheers to the officer who helped me out on this cold evening and put his life in danger to protect me and my car whilst I was swapping wheels!

nice of you to bring it to the attention of others on here...

Like i've said before...that sort of thing goes on day in day out...but is rarely heard....

The same BiB, might have gone on to give someone a speeding ticket minutes later....now that motorist thinks the BiB is a shower of shite...

Funny old world, eh?

Aye, it's funny that they could both be right too. Alternatively the speeding ticket could have been a useful moderating influence, the point is not that speed limits should not be enforced at all, it is that they should be enforced with a little common sense.

When not presenting a danger, yes.

My way of thinking..is who's to know that the driver won't present a danger further down the road...

At the end of the day....the law is the law...if you choose to break it...Go for it...!

However, if you get caught...tough shite..

That's my opinion....and i'm no

The driver could be driving within the speed limit, and yet further down the road could present a danger, what are you going to do, ticket everybody just in case?

I see this quite regularly being a trucker. It won't be me wiping out your "track slag" I, and a lot of heavy drivers I've noticed, get ourselves out to the second lane to give you room. I should point out, that I do this when approaching the Bib parked behind someone they've just pulled. It's amazing how many drivers just throw the door open when they get out for the cozy chat in the back of the trafpol car.
Anyone remember the footage of the guy getting his door taken off by a tank transporter?....bloody lucky not to lose his arm.

I always move over to the second lane if possible. You never know what could come our of the drivers door or even from in front of the car as the split second you are passing.....

Good point phil...

I always find truckers are very safety aware..and often move to lane 2...even when lane 1 is clear...if i'm on a narrow section of hard shoulder..

better there than elephant racing....

Oh, and of course...the car drivers don't do the same at 90mph plus in lane 3...a car's length from each other...?

I don't, and even if I did I can generally see through or round a car. Artics tend to be a tad more opaque.

Car drivers tailgate and it's irritating but that wasn't’t the subject of my post. I simply disagree with you that truck drivers are very safety aware. As I say, they drive 3-4 feet apart on the motorway if you haven’t seen it then you aren't looking. It's bloody dangerous and not the least bit safety conscious.
Rich...
p.s. Don't get the elephant quip?

Yes could be the same guy who caught my bss on the A27 a few weeks ago! Boss was anything but impressed as his speed wasn;t too great, and whilst being videoed by the police he was overtaken by a number of other vehicles!

However do the crime and pay the fine! Not that I said that to the boss!
