Got very angry over reports in the Yorkshire Evening Post generally going on about "speed kills!" and the rubbish spouted by the local "road safety partnership" so sent this to one of the reporters who wrote a "fawning" report on the "Road safety day".

Hello Chris,

Having read the utter rubbish you and the so called " West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership" are publishing in the Evening Post I would like to point out some problems about what that organistion called "speeding" and the figure produced to support the ever increasing burden on drivers. Only 5% of accidents are caused by drivers solely driving over the speed limit. Another 2% can be added by drivers driving at excessive speed for the conditions, or if you prefer still within the Speed limit. Hence using the same "flawed" maths that has been used in you report only 0.25% of deaths on the roads are caused by any sort of "excessive speeding"! On the other hand the lack of Traffic Police actually looking out for and punishing "bad" driving has gone down. This combined with the "wrong" emphasis on Speed rather than road safety has lead to an increase in road users being killed. All since the introduction of "Safety Partnerships" whose "expertise" in road safety appears limited to collecting fines off otherwise safe drivers. They also act in a high handed and arrogant manner. I am STILL waiting for figures from the "safety Partnership" to justify the Cameras on the A65 between Horsforth and Yeadon. This makes me wonder if the figures justifying the GATSO and TRUVLEO units exist for this strecth of road at all. My pointing out that one of the Cameras was incoorectly sited was met with a patronising reply. I note that 3 months after I pointed it out, the Camera it was removed. I would also direct you to another report which tested the Laser devices used by the WYSP. These appear to be inaccurate and in some cases by a considerable margin. The link to the report is here: www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/southwest/series7/speed-cameras.shtml

Perhaps a little more research and actual investigation is required rather than the mindless accetance of the point of view of an organisation that has its own interest's at heart would produce more balanced reports and actually help us all make the roads a safer place.
