Hi all.

Many of you out there own and rave about your C4S's (996) - can I appeal to the other side of ownership...

In buying one of these fine automobiles, what if anything are the must have's on a used example. or anything that MUST be checked before purchase - i.e. recalls or changes to design later to correct an initial engineering or design fault? Am looking at a 2003 model, so would hope that they should be pretty sorted 4 years from release, but I have heard that 996 was erring towards being "mass-produced" and so more succeptible to such problems - comments either way appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance
Jem

nothing to note as far as i'm concerned.

i've had a hassle free year of ownership, although my exhaust has just started rattling - i'm putting it down to speedbumps scraping the underside though. diagnostic at OPC friday should tell me more though.

great car, you won't regret it.

get one, enjoy it, then move on to the nexst must have (am v8?)

Great cars, I had one for 11 months before getting a Turbo and to be completely honest I miss the 4S a little. Turbo goes like stink, but not a massive fan of the spoilers & ducts - the C4S has such a lovely clean shape and I loved the red retro strip round the rear.
Anyway, only thing that went wrong with mine was the RMS which was sorted under warranty. Apart from that ran like a dream. It suffered from a couple of rattles which were sorted. Oh & get a sports exhaust on it, mine didn't & I regretted it for 11 months !!
It was an 02 car in bassalt/black leather.

Sports seats were subject to a recall (on some), but that's not a problem, two brand spanking new leather seats! Yahoo!

Mine suffers from an RMS like many others (sorted on Thursday/Friday hopefully), this is not serious, a lot of cars suffer from minor oil leaks - this doesn't mean the engine's about to fail!!!!

Great cars, fast, safe and fun......will lap Spa all day and still drive back home to Blighty!

Thanks, guys - any more satisfied (or otherwise...) C4S owners out there?

Can anyone give a definitive answer on the RMS problem? It's attracted so much attention on here that it must be more than just a minor ailment (if undetected perhaps?) - and can you be sure if your (prospective) car is likely to be safe from or cured of such a problem?

I have a Cab 4S, good spec (inc sports exhaust)it`s an all day every day car that I still enjoy very much. The GT3 was huge fun but encouraged me to misbehave occasionaly.
The only change needed is a 25 or 30mm drop. No problems with seals .
Mine`s Lapis Blue which is difficult to keep clean for long, other than that thoroughly recomended.

Don`t forget Mothers Day .

Yep, had mine for 21 months and still delighted with it. Mine's Speed Yellow (obviously the best colour....) with switchable sports exhaust, which is a must. I think if I were buying new now I would probably have sat nav for re-sale value, and definitely Xenons. I have sports seats with heating which are superb. Rear wiper is handy in this perfect (virtually) all weather car. I use mine most weekdays as my work vehicle, although I admit last week in the serious snow I wimped out and used a Disco. When I got back in my porker yesterday it immediately made me grin. Best way I can describe it is that I enjoy driving it in all conditions (commuting, heavy rain, fog etc) as well as on those perfect summer driving days. I would love a GT3 and occasionally find myself tempted, but keep realising that the C4S is the best compromise for me. After doing a day with Don Palmer in it I was astounded by how good the PSM system is in all real world situations. Great fun to switch it off on track, but a potential life saver in real world situations (as I found out coming down Snake Pass into Glossop in pouring rain when I overestimated my ability). After nearly two years I am spending much less time than I would normally expect planning my next car.

all i can say is if it's under warranty it's not a problem. an extended warranty (£750) still covers it. i had a rms problem with mine. it meant they had to keep the car in an extra day during the service, which meant i had to play around in their cayenne s for an extra day.

quelle dommage.

Is there a clutch issue to get it changed for free?

How do you know whether a car has PCM 1 or 2 (and what's the difference???)

Cheers all...

I also had a speed yellow C4S with sports exhaust, 2002 model, bought it in Feb 2004 and sold it in Jan 2005 after putting just 3k miles on it.
I found I could never get particularly comfortable in the car (35" inside leg) and I hated the cheap interior...much more modern than a 993 yes, but the quality really felt like a step backwards, creaks and rattles aplenty in the cabin
I'm sure you'll be suprised to hear that my RMS had to be seen too also The £750 extended warranty sorted that out of course, without a warranty the fix is around £750 coincidently.
I decided I wouldn't replace it, but had a drive in a 2005 Boxster 'S' and just couldn't help myself. Cabin is a far nicer and more comfortable place to sit. Roof down and the car just feels more exciting..the fact I can't beat a C4S in a streetlight grandprix doesn't bother me ( I have a lovely little modified ricebox to do that ), nor does the drop in kudos, I bought it for me to enjoy.
C4S is a lovely car, but cabin is just too compromised for me size and quality wise to justify.
