Pointless Rubbish You've Kept...
Discussion
Inspired by the Annoying things your dad does thread... and the Frivolous purchase thread...
Is there anything you have held on to "just in case" or anything you've kept because "I'll use that later"... When really, deep down, you know it is totally useless or have later found it and thought, "why an earth did I keep this"
I'll start:
The bruised, battered and almost unreadable "L" Plate off my old 125cc Motorbike... Not sure what I had planned for that!
You don't need to be a hoarder to partake in this...I'm sure if I walked around your homes I could find an item that you have no purpose or logical reason for!

I finally cracked just last weekend and got rid of the following to the local recycling plant:
1 Range Rover bumper
1 XJR alloy wheel
2 Range Rover TDV8 turbos
1 XKR supercharger
1 Virgin Media HD box.
All had been either in my garage or down the side of the house for at least the last year (or a lot longer in some cases) as I'd spent so much money replacing these items I was hesitatnt to bin these 'broken' bits.
Having time to do a tip run presuaded me to just 'let them go'.

I have a 50CC petrol mister/leaf blower. I have no use for it, and it won't start. However I've held onto it just incase.
Incase of what I've no idea. Maybe my child will want to make model sailing boats on a very calm day and being able to create artificial wind will make me THE Dad. Or perhaps I'll bury it so that some archeologist can find it in 1,000 years and decide that is was a primiative kind of flying device.

I am not too bad, but my wife is a hoarder, her family do seem to hoard crap and despite never being short of cash to replace things they just keep hoarding it and agonise over dumping stuff like old videos, sometimes on grounds of "it might come in handy" or otherwise it may be sentimental but you cant hang on to everything.
To be fair, we did a bit of a lost clearance and she was being ruthless.
Then we have stuff to go, like an old ipod dock, still works but was cheap crap when someone got it for one of the kids, charities dont take it and nobody wants it, but because it works, it cannot be thrown away, she now has to find someone to bestow it on, or she says Ebay it, hmm, not sure how much a generic FM Radio with an Ipod Dock that cost about twenty quid is worth nowadays but it probably isnt worth the mither to sell it, you then get 1p for it and have to take it to the post office, costs more in time and petrol.
I find it best to just get rid of stuff before she sees it, otherwise, it just moves, waiting for a charity bag or someone to give it to.

Yep,
I'm not a hoarder. But I have a decent (big) box of old clothes, I'll know I'll never fit into them ever again - or want to for that matter; but they are from my heyday and I can't bear part with them - You know the type, clothes you loved and wore so much they have a part of your soul in them. I don't know why I keep them, maybe for my son (if I ever have one).
Also another small-ish box full of trinkets and things, memory box really. In reality it's full of crap I should probably chuck but every time I go through it I end up reminicing.
I have a 6/12 month rule. If it's not been used in 6/12 months (size/cost dependent) it get's sold or chucked. Then the following week I realise I need it.
Other than a garage full of car parts but let's not go there...

This weekend i threw out:- front anti roll bar
- whole bunch of door/boot rubber
- rear side windows
- coil pack
- ECU
- Intake manifold
- brake calipers
- boot lid lifty shock absorber type things
- radiator
- steering column + rack
- and a few kg of other small metal bits and bobs
From a Fiat cinquecento i scrapped a few years back, ive still got the engine block + 3 pistons (no sump/head), a whole spare 1.1 lump, alternator, starter motor, battery, the gear stick/cables and a couple of lamp units in the shed. Plus off course the license plates...
Been ruthless these last two weekends, two bin bags of old clothes (from when I was a teenager?!)
-Video player × 2
-Old bass guitar (sold on Ebay)
-Load of furniture from the wives grandmothers place (no idea why we kept it when she died)
-Found a sleeping bag in the loft which I'm pretty sure wasn't ours...
Plus side, we found Risk the board game, let the arguements commence!

I'm not too bad but the wife is pretty terrible. Probably worse since the kids came along as she keeps things like all their old birthday cards "in case they'd like to look at them in years to come".
I do need to do a bit of a purge of my own stuff, it's the things like the odd timber offcuts that you keep as they might come in handy one day, generally the ones that are too big for the wood burner but too small to be of any real use. Other DIY crap like that although I stopped keeping odd screws / nuts / bolts / etc. as it gets silly. If it's not in a pack with it's size on it and new then get rid.

The "annoying things your dad does" thread was posted as a result of my dad's "eccentricities". He is a hoarder beyond belief - he could easily feature on "The Hoarder Next Door".
He will not throw ANYTHING away; hair from his haircuts, used and worn out car parts (eg. clutch plates, he will even come round to my house and remove worn out brake pads FOR A CAR HE DOESN'T OWN from the bin). They had a huge amount of work done last year on the house and every night the builders (mates of mine) would leave and the skip would be full. Every morning the skip would be almost empty - he'd take everything out and stack it round the back. Why oh why does he need a rotten doorframe with smashed glass in it? It's insane. He also videotapes EVERYTHING on TV. He has been doing this since 1978 (that year is correct). Around the house there are tens of thousands of VHS tapes. The thing is that NOTHING is labelled as he didn't want to write on the pristine labels - if you're lucky there might be a scrap of torn off newspaper stuffed in the box with "Dallas 12/5/83" on it. But usually not. So nobody knows what is on the tapes. They're stacked everywhere, and it's a big house. Ditto camcorder tapes. He videotapes everything (which can annoy people). Thousand upon thousand of tapes.
I could go on.
Me personally - I have stacks of old numberplates off cars and bikes I've owned, as well as a rusty rectangle of steel painted in Ford Venetian Red, it's the cutout from when I did a (successful, fortunately) DIY install of a sunroof on my first car (an X reg Fiesta) in 1985. I do keep some stuff too long and have to actively force myself to be ruthless and throw away stuff - having seen my dad hoarding stuff it's a scary eye-opener.

Most of the things my wife owns.
Two binliners full of stuffed toy penguins. Still, they make reasonable loft insulation.I've still got all my uni text books, despite the fact I've worked in a completely different industry to my degree for the last 15 years.
2 Gi's despite not entering a dojo in 10 years
I've got 2 boxes full of audio cassettes, despite not having a cassette player any more.
Threw out my 26 floppy disk set of Microsoft office a your or two back though

MrsTheWife is currently sorting/filing our documents. Bank Statements going back twenty years, ditto payslips. We are keeping the kids busy on the shredder! We moved into the house 18 years ago and put a load of boxes of stuff straight in the loft where they have been ever since. I feel we'll have to get a mini-skip and have a VERY good clearout
