Ive never owned an air cooled car and been thinking with all the price increases and positive reviews from owners I should get on the bandwagon.

Im thinking to sell my m4 which should leave enough room to get a clean 993 C2 (Im also 6ft 4 so hope I fit)

I bought the m4 as it was meant to be my daily but dont really end driving it that much and im lucky enough to have other toys for the weekend.

Im also getting rid of my track spec e46 m3 and instead would track the 993 (around 5 track days a year) Good idea? Do you like your 993? Would track costs be similar to the m3? Thanks for reading beer

Prices for nice 993 C2's have well and truly left the station. 993 make a nice sound and are something of an event to drive in that they don't feel like modern stuff. I'd suggest there are far better track car options for less money though.

My 993 C2S is a right hoot on track, it's a car that requires commitment, but the feedback is simply awesome. You have to learn how to drive an aircooled fast, so technically it's a great exercise. Your M4 will be far quicker, but I recon a lot less fun.

Lots of faster stuff out there for less money, especially anything made in the last 5 years or so, but the 993 does sound stunning, and you'll be the coolest boy on the track.....

I agree theres better track toys out there for the money but after having my dedicated e46 track car for a while im starting to think whats the point. the 993 should be fun on the road/track and should hold value

I think you might struggle for leg room to be honest in a 993, although I do believe the seat runners can be modified to increase travel if required.

There's also a '911 experience' that can be done at the PEC Silverstone, you get to drive a 911 3.2 I think, followed by a 993 and 991.
That's the only time I drove a 993 and I did quite like it, apart from the lack of legroom as I mentioned.

I am 6ft 4 ins as well and cannot fit in a 993 C2 with a helmet on ..... although do fit fine in a 993 GT2R which is more fun on track........
maybe best to get a 964 and mod it for track use ....... a copy RS ..

As the boys have said, with standard seats 6ft4 plus a helmet doesn't work.

I'm 6ft0.5 and with a helmet and sunroof I can only just fit - most 993 C2s seem to have a sunroof.

But you could address this with a dedicated seat/runners.

This.

I have driven a few cars to the extreme, and the feedback on the 993 (with a suspension-setup that suits you) is simply brilliant - challenging, rewarding, and every trip gives you a new insight and opens a new doorway.

If you want to be part of the machine, the control-weights, the connectivity, the absorption that the 993 gives you, with the everyday usability, is... perfect.

I am one of the Three Wise Men that organise the Porsche/Charity Goodwood trackday, so come along and get some rides in the a/c cars on track - every flavour will be there.

Highway is correct on one count though hehe - the prices have already risen.

Stock is fine. Slightly amended (like mine) are still under 101dB.

When you fit sports cat and/or different/chopped boxes, then you are in trouble.

prices for 993s and 964s seems to be almost even now, would just go for a 993 in that case.

headroom (especially with a helmet) seems to be the issue. ill investigate what can be done

Wiser slipper-wearers will correct me if wrong I'm sure, but there was a very-large change in the rear suspension setup from trailing rear-arms on the 964 to the rear multi-link cage-thing on the 993 (stolen from the stillborn 989)

If you want the higher levels of feedback and challenge of the older cars, that might be your answer - for me the feedback/challenge of the 993 is just *right*, combined with the relative modernity and the fact that MrsOC drives and enjoys the 993 means that it's become a keeper.

If I wanted a 'classic' aircooled road car, I'd go for a 993 or 3.2 G50 (Coupes of course).

But, as a fast road/track day toy, then as suggested above, I'd be buying or creating something based on the 964.

They're all good drivers' cars because they are that bit more demanding and rewarding than more modern stuff.

I have had c2 and c4 993,s when they were new and great no doubt but I prefer my 997 GTS and wouldnt go back. If you really want the nostalgia then go for it but coming from M4,s and the like dont discount the water cooled.

I think its worth you driving a 993 first as the air cooled cars are not for everybody. They are marmite, you will either hate or love them.

As others have said, there is a significant difference in handling between the 964 and 993 due to the rear weissach suspension set up on the 993. This is totally a personal preference.

Good luck!
