Aero Wheels

I have a Cervelo S2 which I am looking at getting some new wheels for. Being an aero frame I fancy the idea of some aero wheels too. I did have some RS81 C24 wheel but theses have had it now and I would not buy the C35 versions. I also have a Lynskey which is my sportive / winter bike, I have some Campag Sirocco wheels, whilst I quite like them the bearing are not very good.

Am I just better off getting some Zonda’s (appreciate they are not aero) for the Cervelo? The Cervelo is more my fast training at the weekend an 70 miler sportives. Lynskey more 100 miler sportive and out with the guys.

Any suggestions/help. Budget ideally around £250-£300 but maybe up to £500. I don’t seem to have a lot of luck with wheels. RS81’s buckled for no reason and now have a bump in the roundness, hand built I had were great on the old bike, didn’t like them on the Cervelo, Sirocco wheelset, rear replaced under warranty, in less than 1,000 miles it needed new bearings and they couldn’t get them running smooth with no play so replaced, second one is a little gritty after 500 miles. R500’s have been the more durable but not the best wheel.

eBay chinese carbon clinchers are a bit of a minefield but I think some have had bargains if you're careful where you get them.

Carbon clinchers from 2011cycling2011 thro eBay. Gigantex rims, pillar spokes, novatec hubs, nothing outstanding but for £300 you can't go wrong. Mine have been fantastic and there are loads of other satisfied customers. Ignore the scaremongering and the people who claim they'll break or are made on a back street lock up...

I have a Cervelo R5 and train on Zondas, race/events on Bora One 50mm carbon tubulars. The Zonda is a great wheel, however when I bolt on the Boras, it always surprises me how much easier it is to keep turning the pedals at speeds over 30km/h. Bora Ones are just inside your upper price limit if you're looking to buy used. If you want new, I think your only option in your price range is something from China via eBay, as suggested above. Malcolm at The Cycle Clinic builds great aero wheels, but they cost more than £500, as do Planet X's carbon offerings. Alternatively, the Race30 from Wheelsmith is bang on your upper limit, but I don't know if you'll find it deep enough.

Are you dead set on clinchers or have you considered tubs?

will take a look at the ebay wheel, wasn't really looking at all carbon wheels, more like the RS81 or Cosmic that have the metal braking surface.

I'm using the blue lifeline carbon pads from wiggle which are a super soft compound, braking performance in the wet hasn't caused me an issue yet

Try and ride a bike on carbon rims with carbon brake surfaces. Hopefully it'll help convince you that braking isn't much different from alloy surfaces.

i use Swisstop yellows. They're very good.

Dont be afraid of tubs either. I've just replaced my rear tub as i'd worn it through to the treads.

I am back on the hunt for wheels. Ones I ordered turned up at the place to be dispatched and they had been used!!! They lowered the price but only to £275 so refund taken and back on the lookout.

Have you thought of upping the budget and utilising the 0% finance available with lots of the big retailers? I am looking at that route now, keep my money in the bank and use their free money, whats not to like

I have just swapped the Scirocco wheelset from my Lynskey to the Cervelo for Sunday, doing the Castle ride in Tonbridge. I am looking to put Di2 on the Cervelo this year and the Lynskey was brand new in October so have spent a lot recently on toys. Part of the problem with spending lots of money on wheels is that because i havent had any luck with them i see them as disposable. I can stomach £250/£300 every couple of year, i cant at £600.

If money no object it would be Enve for me, i have Enve seatpost on the Lynskey are it is a work of art. I do like Campag Bullet and Mavic Cosmin Carbone at £600 and £680 respectively

I understand the spend thing only too well myself I bought all the parts for my Colnago build last year, then earlier this sold my old Giant which I'd had for 8 years trouble free and bought a Specialized Tarmac on FleaBay....I really like the Tarmac and had no plans to spend on that but ended up needing a new headset, BB cups then when finally got it ready for the road and I spotted the corroded spokes on the Mavics. Read a few things online about this being common with Mavic and also saw this article with the comments below showing rust just like mine http://road.cc/content/buyers-guide/172908-your-co... so Mavic came straight off the list.

The finance option only popped into my thought process when I was looking online the other day and noticed it on Chainreaction site, they show it being available below certain wheels. Looked on other sites like Tredz, Merlin, Ribble and quite a lot do it now. So rather than pay out again like I have done this last 12 months I thought why not use their money instead and keep mine for other stuff

If longevity is important to you, then I would push you in the direction of some custom handbuilt hoops rather than a factory wheelset.

Regarding Enve, I've ridden a pair of Enve/Chris Kings and much prefer Boras. Enve stuff is undoubtedly well-engineered and the customer service is supposed to be first class, but I just found the wheels far too harsh. Boras ride much more nicely.

How long have you been running these?

Found these on FleaBay, specs look good but what are the clinchers like from the Chinese sellers?
