Range rover classic exhaust manifold
Discussion
Looks like my engine is coming out so it seems to make sense to change the manifolds if I'm going to.
The question seems to be is there really any advantage to a "performance" tubular stainless manifold on a brick and if so which one. Janspeed do one as do rimmers etc. Is it the same part for a 4.2 as a 3.9?
Any suggestions?

Fitted a Double S large bore system to mine years ago with their tubular manifolds. Various fitting problems - incl the offside manifold fouling the starter motor which was resolved by them sending another one. Couple of issues subsequently.
TBH whilst I would fit a stainless system on a long term keeper I wouldn't bother with large bore or tubular manifolds as other than the V8 burble I've not seen any other benefit.
ETA I didn't wrap the manifolds & haven't had any problems - although you do learn very quickly to be careful where your hands are when working in the engine bay after running the engine!

I'm going to choose my cam - real steel cyclone is currently favourite. Once the rest of the bodywork is done (and I know what the bill is!) then I may or may not choose a trick exhaust. Really its for longevity and sound. On paper freer flowing exhausts should work better but for this sort of vehicle lots anecdotal threads seem to go along with what you have said. Back to back dynos would probably prove them wrong but the seat of the pants dyno doesn't seem to notice.
I've also been told about fitting issues of some of the available systems. I did wonder about putting the manifolds on and refitting the existing tailpipes for now but apparently they won't line up!
I gather that changing the manifolds with the engine in situ is not a dreadful job so not the end of the world. I assumed it would make life much easier to do it when the engine is out.
