PH Docs: Is my Ankle OK?
Discussion
Took a sharp blow to the ankle during training the other night. Nice big lump quickly swelled up, and now it looks like this:
The purple bit seems to be blood below the skin, which you can move about if you press hard enough
Doesn't really hurt too much (except right here I got hit), just looks pretty bad.
Any idea what I've done? Is there anything I should do (excluding self-amputation
)
TIA

Totally irrelevant, I know, but here's my horror story...
Years ago I rode motorcycles. One bike had no electric start, only kickstart. It was a single-cylinder, and as everyone knows, time it wrong and the engine kicks back.
So one wet afternoon, I swung my leg over and kicked the starter. The engine kicked back, my greasy boot slipped off and the starter smacked me across the shin.
Ow. So I tried again, and the same thing happened. In the same place.
Jesus, the pain.
I waited until the expletives stopped, then tried again.
And my foot slipped off.
F%@& ME, the pain.
I had to lean the bike against the wall and crawl into the house.
Over the next few days I developed the most horrendous bruise. It started about an inch below my knee and went RIGHT ROUND my calf.... all the way down to my ankle and along most of my foot, particularly the sole.
Eventually I hobbled along to A&E where a Pakistani doctor took one look and said "You walked in here, you can walk back out".
Then he summoned two tasty student nurses, wearing white uniforms with little underneath, to apply a roller bandage to my leg.
Which was nice.

No pain when I walk on it.
Blow was a forearm block to a front snap-kick (as I attempted to disarm a knife-wielding black-belt)

I thought the general thought was that a kick should never be blocked with your arms?
Just curious as I am still quite low down the ranks...

I think it depends on what you are studying. Shotokan does use arm blocks against kicks, but timing (and the angle of the arm) is crucial for the blocker to avoid injury. In this case, the block was essentially perfect because the Nidan I was fighting blocked my kick causing me enough pain that I dropped my guard, and he was able to stab me repeatedly with a large hunting knife (rubber).
What style do you train?
