Not the world's most interesting car, but I'm sort of excited!

We have a loyal and faithful 2003 (04 MY) V70 T5 that has been our family bus since we had surprise twins in 2010. We've been very pleased with it, although when I initially bought it I was not expecting to like it quite as much as I did. It's required nothing other than routine servicing and (lots of) tyres in the 70k we've had it. Off the back of the experience with that car I also bought a 2008 C70.

Well anyway, the MOT is up on the V70 in a couple of weeks and we are increasingly concious of it's age and mileage. We went to the Ford dealership to look at the Grande C-Max and S-Max as a sensible choice, and with the 240ps petrol engine the S-Max was a dull but worthy thing. We agreed to go away and discuss it, although my wife looked pretty unhappy about the decision.

I wanted to look at a rare 2013 AWD T6 S80 in the neighbouring Volvo dealership so we wandered over, and my wife took an immediate shine to the XC60. I pointed out that she could have that instead of the 7 seater Ford bus if she wanted, the very helpful chap at the dealer said they had one in stock that was about to go into the showroom and would we like to take a look. Anyway we bought it, and pick it up next week. She then admitted that she just wanted to cry at the idea of having to drive the S-max around, which really surprised me as she is not at all image concious and has no qualms about our V70 being the oldest and scruffiest car everywhere we take it. I think she just has a prejudice against Fords and cars that look like a bus.

I'd have liked to add a couple of extras, but we wanted it before the MOT is up on the V70 as I can't be arsed to pour any more money into it when it's going in a month or two anyway. I won't be driving it much anyway. It's an SE Lux D5 AWD in doom blue with a manual gearbox. Must be one of the last possible opportunities to buy a 5 cylinder Volvo!

I have to admit that I dislike the entire concept of a soft roader, but I did warm to this. As far as I'm concerned the best thing about it is being able to start the engine from the key, but she doesn't judge me for some of the more unorthodox stheaps I like. Without exaggeration we find ourselves replacing tyres due to pothole damage every 3 to 6 months, and a couple of months ago had to get a buckle taken out of a wheel. Hopefully 60 profile rubber will be a bit better suited to the crumbling road surfaces. It's a shame that the only way to get sensible profile tyres is to buy a faux 4x4. Wife is pleased, and I've spotted loads on the roads since we bought it.

MILF Float - love this, will be using it from now on.

Quite liked the prototype XC60 that Volvo brought with them to a car show I was at 9/10 years ago, had a good prod about but they wouldn't take my money for one at the time (because I didn't have enough).

May I be the first to post this here: http://sniffpetrol.com/2016/05/11/autonomous-volvo...

Looks nice, a bit unusual to have the manual box though.

I looked at a few of these a couple of years ago, but for some unknown reason the Swiss have a penchant for speecing them with cloth seats and finding the right spec (normal wheels, no bodykit, auto, nav, xenons and leather) proved pretty much impossible.

great choice in car OP! My parents are on their 3rd XC60 now as they keep getting asked to trade theirs in so there must be a real 2nd hand market for them. In the last two cars they had the D5 but decided in this one to go for a D4 and if i'm honest i can't notice a difference in performance and if anything it's a little quieter inside. Good choice overall though!

Yes I thought the manual was an interesting choice. I think the car would probably be better with a good auto, but sadly the D5 comes with the old 6 speed AW box which is both inept and fragile, so a good auto wasn't an option. We were both largely indifferent to choice of gearbox, in the end a £1k saving and having the car now rather than in 2/3 months won out.

Interesting comment about the D4, presumably that's the 180bhp VEA engine? As I understand it that is FWD only, the AWD D4 is a detuned (single turbo?) 2.4 5 pot and the AWD D5 is the twin turbo 220bhp 2.4 5 pot. On paper the FWD D4 is a match for the AWD D5, being lighter and without the transmission losses.

Volvo seem to have the right car at the right time, the salesman said they don't stay in stock for long new or used and they seem to be everywhere you'll find yummy mummies.

As for the Waitrose comment, I guess it'll fit in better than our 13 year old V70 T5 with a small hole in the exhaust...

They seem to be massively popular with their target market, my brother-in-law is on his second one and looking at the stock at the local Volvo dealer they never have more than a couple (probably why I couldn't find one when I was looking). They do have a forecourt overflowing with V40s and V60s though, and a decent load of brand new XC70s at big discounts which look tempting to my inner geography teacher.

Yeah I've been looking at the various run out XC70/V70/S80 models they are selling for about 60% of list price. Could be a bargain if you buy a car and keep it until the wheels drop off. I even looked at a T6 XC70 with the polestar map, probably the last car in the universe anyone would expect to have 320bhp or so. I imagine they'll be very hard for the dealers to shift on if they are sitting there next to the V90 when it turns up.

The depreciation on the V40 appears to be pretty savage, I think the pricing for new ones is highly optimistic although you see loads around. There is a nice 3 year old fully kitted out 2.5 T5 on Autotrader for £18k that would make a nice runaround...

Wimminz and SUV's what is it?

My OH made a bee-line for the Mazda CX-5 when we went looking in there. I did in the end manage to persuade her back round to a normal car. She did have to conced the CX-5 was simply two big for two people.

Nice cars though these Volvos. Looks lovely in that colour.

Good choice i like my MILF Float smile mine is also a D5 manual, owned it for 3 years now and it's never needed a thing other than my own add on's.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it the twin turbo D5 has got some grunt as well when you need it and it sounds nice.

Yeah, she's an internet porn star no less. She's going to be furious when she finds out mind you.

ETA - Looks like we jumped ship from the V70 at the right time, the MOT failure sheet has come in:
Reason(s) for failure

Parking brake: efficiency below requirements (3.7.B.7)
front Windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid (8.2.3)
Parking brake lever has no reserve travel (3.1.6b)
offside rear Registration plate lamp not working (1.1.C.1d)
nearside rear Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)
nearside front lower Suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement front (2.4.G.2)
offside front lower Suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement front (2.4.G.2)
rear Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases silencer (7.1.2)
Power steering component(s) leaking steering rack (2.3.3b)

Advisory notice item(s)
nearside rear Anti-roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint (2.4.G.2)
nearside front lower Suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement rear (2.4.G.2)
offside front lower Suspension arm rubber bush deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement rear (2.4.G.2)
nearside front Brake hose slightly deteriorated (3.6.B.4d)
offside front Brake hose slightly deteriorated (3.6.B.4d)
Power steering component(s) has slight seepage from a component reservoir (2.3.3b)

The leaking steering rack is pretty much fatal, without the bushes and blowing exhaust. Looks like it might be getting scrapped frown

I quite fancy one of these for my missus. Regarding the V70, have you tried that Power steering stop leak stuff, I think it's made by Lucas, it's got to be worth a punt.

I think it'll be going on eBay as "spares or repair" with a list of the MOT failures. It'd be nice to see someone with some free time and the skills put it back on the road, none of the problems are really fatal, but I don't have the time or space to do it myself.

ETA - Pleased to say my friend is having it off me and is going to restore it to full health. I'd have been very sad to see it go off to be crushed.

Getting a new one out for a few days next week as a possible replacement for our much loved but now too large XC90. Can anyone tell me what mpg I could expect from a D4?

About 39mpg apparently, people are getting between 32 and 48 on here.

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/volvo/xc60-200...

That probably includes the 5 pot D4 in the AWD and the new 4 pot VEA engine in the same figures though. Are you looking AWD of FWD, Auto/manual? I think unless you are a complete lead foot 40 - 45mpg seems a sensible expectation.

Well I've got hold of it and covered about 300 miles today. 38mpg seems reasonable in normal mixed driving, a bit more if you're careful.

It's not very quick, the weight obviously works against it as well as the aerodynamics at higher speed. Engine is like any other D5 but very progressive with power delivery, not much sensation of turbocharger action going on at all.

I can see that a D4 auto would be tediously slow, this one is crying out for the polestar remap to give it some mid range pull.

Oh and here is a picture of it about as far offroad as any XC60 has every gone:

One year on and it's been flawless. Had a set of front tyres last month at 15k, that's about it. Engine loosened up nicely and it's averaging 30mpg being driven like it was stolen. I can confirm it will pull up to the 130mph limiter too.

Wish it was an automatic, and the new XC60 makes it look very old hat hehe
