Hi all,

So today my 2002 BMW 325ci failed its MOT in a pretty spectacular fashion, all brake related.

So Really the purpose of this topic is just to try and work out roughly what the below (linked) would cost at a standard independent garage and whether or not this garage (new to me) is about to rip me off!

Not sure this is the right thread to put this, but thanks anyway!

A few years back I paid about £300 to have new rear brake pipes (inner/outers) fitted. It's a bit of a PITA job, apparently. (South east - BMW specialist).

I'm guessing all of yours will need doing if your fronts are corroded too.

Mine never failed an MOT, just started losing fluid one day.

That plus £200ish for new discs/pads up front and a little bit of time on top to adjust the handbrake? Or DIY or keep costs down.

If I were you, even with a rudimentary mechanical knowledge & tool kit, I would be doing all but the brake pipes myself anyway.

Luckily I have the stuff to do those too, but not everyone does.

New front discs/pads/ clean check/lubricate (in the proper places) and adjust the brakes front & rear after doing the discs/pads & then take it anywhere for the hoses.

50% saving minimum for a few hours work.

Has this come as a surprise to you? I'd have thought this'd be quite noticeable.

Unfortunately away from home at the moment, and busy with work so I cant really do the work myself.

Well I knew their were issues with the handbrake, but the rest was a surprise, there has been no change in braking since the last MOT, and while braking hard the car never pulls to one side or behaves unusually.

At a normal garage I'd imagine that'll end up being around £450 all in, more if they need to drop the subframe to get at the rear brake lines.

Slap in your reg at Eurocar parts or GSF and find out how much thefront discs will cost you. Throw in a set of pads as well and a litre of brake fluid. .

A set of copper brake lines made to your design, or better still take in the corroded pipes once removed for a perfect fit, will cost you sub £50 at any decent motor factors.

Now factor in the labour. On a 4 or 2 post lift discs and pads on both fronts should be much less than two hours. Swapping the lines would be less than an hour and adjusting handbrake would 30 mins at most.

Do the sums, does £700 look like a good deal ?

Personally I think its a bit rich .

Cheers,

Tony
