A few years ago I bought a Shutz gun to spray some Stone chip on to my car. It was a disaster, nothing came out of it and after farting about with it I gave up and stuck it in a cupboard. Brushed the stone chip on.
Fast forward a few years and I thought I would try it with wax oil, nope useless. Went out and bought a cheap pump up sprayer instead.

Again a few years later and a couple of months back I thought I'd try again, using it to spray upol Raptor. After following the instructions to the letter, I still couldn't get any thing but a few dribbles.

Having thought about it and posted on here a bit, I came to the conclusion my small compressor just wasn't up to the job.

So tonight I borrowed a serious compressor from work, brought it home on a trailer, mixed up the raptor, by the book and tried again...... Still bugger all came out.

I just can't get my head around it, it's not like there are any adjustments, just an air valve and a trigger.

It's in the bin now I can't be arsed to even clean it.

Question is should I get another or am I just pissing in the wind. I've brushed on three out of the four litres of raptor already. It would be nice to have that stipples finish the guy in the tube video got with his Shutz gun though.

Anybody else had fun and games with these things? Mine is/was a bodyline one and appears to be fairly well made.

Have you been running some thinners though it after each use?

Have you been using dedicated cans for the gun or the big tub? It won't spray the tub stuff as it is way to thick, the cans are much thinner and even then the need shaking for ages and preferably left bobbing around in hot water for a while!

I used the pack with four dedicated bottles to attach to the gun. Tried warming it last time. Expected today to be generally warm enough anyway.

Maybe I should have stuck it in a bucket of hot water first.

Does it have a two stage nozzle ,ie can the smaller tip be removed leaving a larger opening .
I've had my gun for 25 years and it still throws a wobbly and refuses to spray stonechip sometimes , it recently refused to spray black and out of curiosity I tried a can of white and it worked.......I've found that it's very susceptible to the viscosity or mass of the material being sprayed . It copes with waxoyl every time with the small tip nozzle.
I always heat the material to be sprayed in boiled water and often just add a spoonful of thinners at a time until it works.

Put your finger over the nozzle and pull the trigger!
Actually, dont do it, you'll be covered- its usually reserved for the apprentice.
Is it the type with an adustable nozzle, might need winding in or out. Is the airhole clear? If it sprays thinners through, it "should" work, maybe your compressor isnt powerful enough?
If all those are ok, maybe just buy a new one, they're cheap enough and pretty disposable anyway.

Can't see any way to adjust it and I checked all the bleed holes were clear.
I'm either going to stick to other means or replace it, I've not bothered to clean it it's scrap metal now.

Anybody recommend one?, Clarke ones look decent value.

I doubt it's the compressor - I've got a 3hp Sealey with a 50l tank and was able to cover the bottom of my project with stonechip from the bottles I bought. My gun is just a cheapo no-name one that I bought from an autojumble for £8 last year.

If you strip it down, is there possibly some casting flash somewhere that stops the thicker stuff getting though it?

Obligatory photo of stippling, which was something I particularly wanted to get as well. Could be neater though.

ETA - I didn't heat the stonechip tins. The work was done in September last year, I can't remember what the temperatures were like.

That's the look i was wanting, but as its turned out I've ended up having to brush on three quarters of my Raptor.
I still have another bottle so might be able to do the more visible areas.

I can't seem to get the gun to pieces, its either locked in at the factory or gauled up.

Looks like I'm just going to have to get another

I had the same problem when I first bought my schutz gun.

It turned out that the supply tube was up against the bottom of the schutz tin.
I cut 1/4 inch off the bottom of the tube and that sorted it!

Just checked, it's about half an inch short and beveled at 45 degrees, so it's not that.
Wish it was......

I spray a lot of Waxoil with these type of guns.

Make sure there isn't a blockage, If it'll spray thinners through, then it's obviously working.

It is worth checking again that the inlet tube isn't fouling at the bottom of the can.

Make sure you are using the right pressure, too high a psi and it can just vaporise.

Lastly consistency. We heat Waxoil to spray it, you need it quite runny, way more runny than you would for brushing it.

I run a body shop in north london and i to have had problems over the years with shutz guns to,ive found the main problem being what your spraying out of them, theirs all types of stone chip on the market which are just to thick to be sprayed,i tend to buy the stone chip which you can get from VW or peoguet which is proper rubber based stuff ,its water based and when sprayed it changes colour as it dry,s out thats if you wan,t the factory look.AS far as the gun goes start with a new one and all ways wash it out after use......

Just to say I'm using Upol Raptor, which can't be thinned very much and is supposed to be used with a Shutz Gun as the canisters are designed to be mixed up and attached to one.

Ian, have posted these notes before so hopefully they'll help. I used tintable Raptor and sprayed using an Apollo 1200 Spraymaster HVLP with a standard nozzle; the results were superb. Schultz nozzles are frequently hit and miss and they're prone to clogging. The Apollo's are a doddle to use and are not expensive https://www.google.co.uk/#q=apollo+spraymaster+120... , [just remember you're using isocyantes]

Here's what results look like even with a standard non-schultz nozzle...

I think I commented on some other site perhaps. Anyhow, I never had that much success with waxoil etc. with their pump up sprayers unless the stuff was thinned well and warmed in a bucket of hot water. Recently, over the last few years, I've used my air compressor to good effect with a paraffin gun, slightly thinned the waxoil with white spirit and got it all good and hot on the old camping stove (extinguisher on standby and escape route in place) Then I can really throw the stuff around and into holes, channels and so on, mostly on my wife's perishing MX5 to stop it from dissolving. Afterwards I clean the gun carefully as residue can block or restrict the output.
