My car went to the local Indy today for a minor service and I was told it needed new rear pads, but the discs are ok. Isn't it nice that some garages only replace the things that need replacing. A mutual respect that the wool doesn't get pulled over your eyes. I am very happy with my Indy.

...but, did you check what the rear pad wear was before you took it in?

Did they need replacing?

Never touch my pads til the lights come on - gives 500-1000 miles at least.

I recall Sytner telling me my E46 pads needed changing. Took the car to an Indy who said "you've got about 6k miles left on those" and indeed he was correct.

In all honesty, I think there was a little more meat left on the pads, but if I drop the car off in the morning and pick it up at night it costs me £40 in travel.

So to be clear, the pads didn't actually need replacing yet, but because they didn't suggest replacing the discs at the same time, this is somehow a positive recommendation for this garage?

Trouble is if you wait for the pads to wear out and drive them on minimum to see if you can get the wear limiter light on, this will cause your pads to get extremely Hot and may affect the piston seals as the heat will now be transferred , they will also lose efficiency ,Probably ok on your average runabout but not good maintenance practise on a Porsche as it could get costly...
