I set off for work 5.30 this morning and 2 miles down the road (just hitting the higher speed motoring section) I get 'Engine Fault Garage', no other symptoms. Half way back I get the particulate filter flashing light, no other symptoms except both illuminations. Waiting for the VW to open, will let people know what they say. It's an 08 plate Golf GT Sport 170 TDI.

Hi
Had the same problem with our Golf 170 was advised to take it for a reasonably long drive at legal limit to clear the filter, it worked.

Read up on DPF regeneration - if you detect any change in engine sound or idle speed make sure you allow it to finish before switching the engine off, otherwise it's a failed regen and after a few of those you get the symptoms you describe.

Alternatively if the car is behaving normally it could be a pressure sensor issue, which if it starts playing up can report incorrect loading of the DPF and similar issues

Sorry I know it's useless but I don't know, I think there was an oil leak. I'm pretty useless when it comes to car mechanics. Mathematician.
