Precision Driving Day @ Porsche Experience Centre

Anyone done this day? Is it worthwhile? Will be using my own car. Any tips?

Did this a few years back. If it's the same format they take you on the experience centre first (handling, ice hill, kick plate etc.) then nice lunch and on to Silverstone circuit.

My tip would be to hire one of their cars! It cost me £200 for Cayman S and at the end of the day I'd used tank of their gas, two tyres worn out and break warning lights came on. But maybe it was just my driving...

It was one-to-one all day and the car wasn't shared. So lots of driving time.

I did this the other day, great fun and better than the old one - I had Rob as an instructor who was great. Very nice building with cars to look around etc

Tips - use their car if poss and spend lots of time on the low friction surface and kick plate! Great fun and good for car control

Will be doing it again in a few weeks as a part of my deal buying my car

This has given me the urge to go again now! I'll probably just do the half-day warm up on the tracks of the experience centre only and take my own car as they are mostly low-friction. If I was going on the main circuit I'd hire one of theirs

As I understood it you used your own car in the morning on the low friction stuff, then used one of their cars in the afternoon on the track?

I'd prefer to know how my car handles rather than another one plus it keeps the costs down. But if its used on the track then I might have to consider it as a cheaper option.

No, when I did the precision course I hired their car and used it for the whole day. So just used mine to travel there. Mine was new at the time and I could hire an identical model.

When I was there for some half day thing last year PEC said they'd massively increased the cost of using their cars to get people to use their own cars instead. That link won't work for me but last year was told Precision was £760 + £890 for car hire. £1200 for Performance course car hire

I've had a very similar quote for the same experience, so I’m not sure if I should use my own car or not.

Don't know about the precision day, but I just did a Range day at Silverstone, and I have to admit it was a great experience. Whats great is that the instructors (one on one) really push you, telling you to brake harder, accelerating faster and longer... no holding back! All the aspects of the course are great experiences, like the ice hill, skid plate etc. I would definitely recommend renting one of their cars if you can...

I did the one-day course with Richard Atwood a year ago (with two hours on the National) and a two day course with Rob this year (with two hours each day on the International). I didn't bother messing around with the kick plate or low grip section, but that's personal preference. I thought both sessions were excellent and would recommend them. That said, you're probably paying a bit over the odds for a nice lunch and the Porsche branding versus a trackday with an instructor in your car. For what it's worth I'll probably do it again next year if circumstances permit.

I think they'll try and line up specific instructors for you, if so I'd recommend Rob without reservation and Ben was also great when I did a warm-up day.

Would be interested in anyone's feedback if they'be done a Master day or a Classic day.

I did the Precision days a few years ago and although it was great, it was just more of the same as you do on the basic courses. It was over £1k and the Boxster was priced a few hundred so the breakdown cost must have changed since then.

If I could go back I would have tried something different like a Silverstone Circuit course or Car Limits - though as I haven't done those i cannot compare them to the Porsche courses.

If you haven't done Porsche course before you will enjoy Precision, but do not expect to come out with a Race license - that requires more training and I think they offer that as bespoke, but so do Silverstone circuit.

Thanks all for the replies. Not after a race licence just after learning the limits of the car in a sensible but entertaining way, with less cars about than on a standard track day.

Just had a quote and to rent the same Boxster as I have the total price is £1650 so with the day at £760 makes renting their car £890.....I can get 4 new tyres and some minor damage repaired for that price so probably far cheaper taking my own.

A full day with Marot Pro Driving is £700 so a similar price for the day.

No dates till the end of August so will be a fair old wait.

If you are wanting to learn and understand the handling dynamics of your car and learn/develop driving skills in a safe and varied driving environment, then I would wholeheartedly recommend that you look at Ivan Thompsett at Total Car Control who will provide 1:1 driver training at Millbrook Proving Ground, plus the option of a second day on road, which I highly recommend.

Ivan instructed for Porsche and headed up BMW MPower Institute and is an excellent instructor. MIllbrook facility is huge in comparison to PEC Silverstone and you'll get more out of Millbrook. I've driven at both venues now and I know which one I'd choose in a heartbeat. I'm in no way affiliated with Ivan at Total Car Control, other than a satisfied client who would definitely use his professional services again. Go for the two day Master Class.
