A quick question for the BiB. Travelling to work today through some roadworks on a dual carriageway with a separate bus lane on the left, I saw a yellow sign saying “Bus Lane Suspended During Works”.

Does this mean you are allowed to drive in the bus lane (presumably to ease congestion in the roadworks) or does it mean nobody including buses is allowed in the bus lane?

Due to the road layout, the cones everywhere and the bus lane being completely separate to the main carriageway the meaning of the sign was not clear. Nobody was using the bus lane as I think they were unsure if they were allowed to.

Can somebody clarify?

Thanks,

TSS

It means you can use it without fear of a tax collector pinching you for it...

Get a picture of the sign before driving in the lane, I'm sure there will be tickets issued simply for the cash.

TSS - can you report on how the traffic flow has been affected by this?

Well obviously the traffic would be smoother through the roadworks if people used the bus lane as well. A sign saying “Please use bus lane” would be a lot clearer.

(As it is the whole are is a mess. It was a 70mph dual carriageway until recently. Now it’s 40mph (temporarily 30mph while roadworks being finished), with 3 sets of lights in the space of 300m for minor junctions that used to have small slip roads. The council has managed to turn a free flowing road into a big traffic jam/traffic light farm!)

Alternatively...perhaps use it without the fear of another car (who's driver wants to do the same) colliding with you...as they are only 'looking' for a bus...

In addition...you'd be able to use the lane..safe in the knowledge that you haven't undertaken dozens of other motorists, queueing properly, as your urgency is more important than theirs...

the YOU isn't YOU plotless...just the Royal YOU

Something tells me you haven't filled out many accident/collision reports...

"I glanced to me right on the roundabout, saw the car was some distance off and pulled out....I didn't see the cyclist near to the kerb and hit it"

People 'Expect' things to be there and only look for that thing in their mind's eye..

I dealt with a car v pedestrian collision in a bus lane several months ago. Scenario...adult female crosses from one side of the road to another.....lots of cars waiting in a queue...bus lane next to the queue empty as far as the eye can see...so see walks in between the waiting cars...looks over them to see no bus approaching and continues.....Only to be struck by a Maxda MX5 that was driving down the bus lane....
She'd not expected it to be there...(rightly or wrongly)...
