Won't start -kinda

Ok
Just done flywheel, after which seemed to run well.
Noticed on the drive though the fuel level gauge is possible partially detached as depending which corner you was taking and the camber the fuel gauge would flicker between quarter of a tank and just above red line (beeping every time when low fuel light came on!)
Got to car 2 days later (parked nearby, slight downward slope - very slight).
Wouldn't start.
Would crank, on usual cranking revs it would strike up but when got to about 800rpm cut straight out again. Put foot on accelerator it would get to about 1200rpm then cut out.
So, my thoughts are the gauge is faulty, run out of diesel, now air in the system......
Put £6 of diesel in tank. Jump leads on. Cycled key - uplift pump is sounding and spurting on inspection.
Still the same - crank, strike up, cut out.
Now it ran yesterday, post work fine - and the fact it initially strikes up would indicate crank and cam sensors are reading okay.... (although I can't even remember disconnecting a crank sensor when doing the gearbox - unless it reads crank pulley?)
Also, I don't believe it possible to install the flywheel incorrectly as the bolts are not evenly spaced...
Sounds like air in the system?
Or not?
Annoying really as they are under the rocker cover / mechanical do can't just crack off pipes argh.

On my 1.4TDI, very occasionally ,I get starting problems. And it's caused by a fuel shut off valve ,adjacent to the EGR .From what I gather the valve should shut the fuel off when ignition is switched off and then open after engine stops. When mine sticks, I get a start ,with attempts to start/ low revs, not responding to throttle. I'd remove the top plastic engine cover ,then look at the air tube on the rear of the top of the engine. On the left side(left of middle) is a shiny circle of metal. Behind that is a cable attached to a lever system. Lift it and release . Starts- then the EGR valve wants cleaning.
