How to find out the speed limit of a road ?
Discussion
I have received a speeding letter asking me if I was riding at the time and place etc. It tells me what speed I was allegedly doing but not the speed limit.
I've checked the location the letter states on google street view and it looks like the road at that location is a national speed limit road ( although that might be out of date now ) I know some roads in that area have changed to 50 zones recently.
Before I go any further id like to at least find out a little more information. Do any websites show this information ?

Could you use google maps street view and search for a sign?
Done that. I think it must be out of date I think or possibly a temporary limit was in place. If you put the location up someone might live nearby.

No info on the road in question, thanks anyway
If the road is close to home can you drive back there?
Quoted from speedlimit.org:
Any road with regular street lighting has a default speed limit of 30 mph unless signs indicate otherwise. The entry to a 30 mph zone must be marked by a "30" sign on both sides of the road, but no repeater signs are permitted within the zone (on the grounds that they might be confusing if some roads had them and others didn't). "30" roundels on the road surface are however permitted, with a special dispensation.
In some circumstances, where a side road has a lower limit than the main road, only one speed limit sign for the lower limit is needed, on the left-hand side of the road, and no signs at all are needed for the higher limit if there are repeater signs on the main road indicating the limit within 100 yards of the junction.
Where there is no street lighting, the default limit is 60 mph for single-carriageway and 70 mph for dual carriageway roads. This is referred to as the "National Speed Limit" (NSL), and entry to these zones is marked by the familiar "derestriction" sign with a diagonal black stripe on a white background. Repeater signs are not normally used but are not specifically prohibited.
Any other limit requires roadside repeater signs at regular intervals prescribed by law. The mere fact that a road runs through an urban or rural area makes no difference to the speed limit - it is the presence or absence of street lighting. Thus a lit dual carriageway in a rural environment would have a 30 limit unless signs indicate otherwise, and the speed limit through the snooty Cheshire village of Prestbury, which still refuses to have street lighting, would be 60 in the absence of 30 signs and repeaters.

I might have a run out at weekend but the letter states it was in the A429 Lightwood Green near Cloy Lane, Wrexham
A539 I suspect, 50 in Wales, 60 in England.Friend said....."it's 40mph all the way past the cloy lane junction until near that house on the left hand side and then it changes to national speed limit. It then goes back to 40mph when you get to the bends after the red hall lane junction"

No spoonfeeding required. If the OP has fat fingers then you are probably correct. However if the OP has transcribed correctly then he might reply that he wasn't anywhere near Warwickshire at the stated time.
I'm guessing fat fingers:4 and 2 down one from 5 and 3

Anyway, what's important is the OP's speed! If he thinks it was NSL it might be

The pisser is I even lthought to myself that looks a prime speed camera spot be careful, even looked in there when I went past although didn't see them, must of been set well back.
We must of missed the 40 sign and presumed it was 50 or something as all 4 of us have received a letter at 48 49 49 and 50mph.
