Function of Push Button Dimmer Knob (US Spec)?

2008 V8V Roadster..

Does anyone know what the push function of the dimmer is suppose to accomplish other than locking in the settings? Or is that it? I was hoping it somehow was a button to turn off the interior lights when a door is opened because I am unable to turn the interior dome light off when either door is open (the map light buttons on the dash only turn the map light on and off with the door closed).. Thanks!

It's just a way to hide the knob when not in use. nothing electrical about it that I know of.

it is the same on several car I own, just push to put it away
