Simpleton Alert!!! : Speed, Distance and Time

I need to brush up my knowledge of this in the next two weeks, as the last time i did any work concened with it was 6 years ago at GCSE level!! I know it's pretty poor seeing I am only 22, but there we go! Lack of use has caused my mind to forget it all!! All I can recall is that Speed= Distance/Time. Examples of the questions I need to answer tend to be easy and rather like this:

Travelling at 240mph, how long will it take me to travel 50 miles? Or, perhaps even easier, travelling at 30 mph how long to travel 1 mile?

Please don't mock me too hard, I know that as a well-educated, recent graduate I should be able to do this but the maths part of my brain seems to have left!! It isn't helped by me getting rather stressed and frustrated over it all, as back in the day I could whip the answers out with ease!

Can anyone help out or give any advice on where to look.

At 60 mph, you travel one mile every minute.

So at 30 mph, you take 2 minutes to travel 1 mile.

At 240 mph how long for 50 miles?

50 / 240 = about 0.2 hours, x 60 = 12.5 min or 12 min 30 sec

at 60mph you are doing 1 mile a min..

so at 30mph... 2 mins for the mile.

at 240mph ... every min you will do 4 miles, so 12 and half mins

I sure someone smart will be along in a minute but I thought it was the Distance/Speed/Time triangle:

So D=S*T, S=D/T, T=D/S

So your 50 miles is 12 minutes(ish) and your 30mph mile is 2 minutes.

Speed=Distance/Time - Try to imagine them as a pyramid like this:-

You can then get the other equations from that pyramid eg D=SxT and T=D/S.

Just remember at 60mph you will do 1 mile per minute 120mph 2 miles 240 4 miles etc. Learn a few by heart and you will be able to calculate the rest really easily. I had to learn this a few years ago when I did a Flying Scholarship with the RAF, I was told this method and had no problems and I'm rubbish at maths!

You wanted to know......

travelling at 30 mph how long to travel 1 mile?

30 = 1 / x

x= 1 / 30 (measured in hours don't forget) ie 2 minutes


Travelling at 240mph, how long will it take me to travel 50 miles? Or, perhaps even easier,

240 = 50 / x

x= 50/240 (*60 to convert from hours 2 minute) ---> 12.5 minutes

I know I find this stuff easy but I could have got my cat to type this

Thanks Vixpy. I worked them out after I had posted, but it's just when the numbers end up re-occurring that it gets a bit odd as I can't remember how to translate that in regard to seconds. I.e. 12.2 as the result of the division, but then what does it become in seconds? 12 minutes 20 seconds?

Just seen another question which I can't work out because of time left over as it were:

12 mph speed, how long to travel 16. 12 into 16 is 1 with four left over, but i really can't see what to do about the damn four!!

1.333 hours.
There are 60 mins in one hour, so 0.1 hours is 1/10 of that or 6 minutes.

Your journey will take 1 hour 20 ish

You can work out how long it takes to do a mile and multiply it by 16, or work out how long to do 4 miles and multiply it by 4

12mph is 1/12 hours (5 minute per mile)

or 1/3 hours (20 minutes, per 4 miles)


4 x 20 = 16 x 5 = 80 (One hour 20 minutes)
