Hi,

I bought a UV filter for a new (to me) lens about a week ago.

I fitted it to the camera and have now noticed what looks like discolouration in the coating on the filter. Here's a photo;

What could have caused this? Is it likely to be a problem and should I send the filter back? (It's a Hoya, bought from Amazon).

Thanks.

Easy solution...

Take it off - it's not necessary -

Hopefully not necessary, but I've had the front element of a lens saved on a couple of occasions by a UV filter so I like using them.

Is it affecting the images? Take a shot with it on then another with it off?

Can't help, but IMHO - Put a lens hood on to protect the lens, and throw the UV filter away. UV filters won't help, but will hinder.

I used them 30 years ago when they were needed but hated them even then. Now they are just a way of degrading image quality and causing flare. Your lens has a UV filter included - unless it's very, very old (like me)

As much as I hate UV filters, I don't think they're plastic!

Erm, exactly!

Such comments aside, thanks for your help. FWIW, I've sent the filter back for a refund and will just use a lens hood from now on!
