Hi all im hoping someone can give me some sort of clue as to whats going wrong. I purchased a cat D rs4 b7 last week (year 07.) When i start her up she will go to 8200 rpm but then thats it the car seems like it is being limited to 6800 rpm. Unless i restart the car and put my foot to the floor within like 30 sec then i get to 8200 again but only the once. There are no engine management lights or any other warning lights showing. Apart from this issue the car is running fine with no other issues ?

Are you trying this with the car stationary?
I don't think it will rev out unless moving.
Doesn't explain why you can on first starting I know.
Not sure if I read somewhere about turning off the traction control let's you rev higher for hard launches!

You redline your car 30 seconds after starting it? Why?

Anyway, my S5 will only Rev to 4K when stationary. Presumably to stop idiots redlining it for no apparent reason.

I only redline the car once it has warmed up but what i mean is. I have to restart the car to get it to rev to 8200. Thanks for all replys. I have sorted out the problem. One of tne vacume hoses was cut which was making the manifold flap stick.

Bmw thanks for your input but i dont redline my car for the sake of it. I just wanted my car to perform how its supposed to perform.
6200 rpm is no where near redlining an rs4 anyway.

You made it sound like you do this as soon as you start it up. Which is generally going to be a good way to big bills.

The RS4 is limited to 7k rpm until the oil is warm enough (forget the water temp gauge).

This one piqued my interest, so I checked the great book. The book states "something" like this:
At engine oil temperatures below 25C the DIS shows the message "max 7000rpm" instead of the oil temp. This message means the engine speed should not exceed 7000rpm. However, the message merely serves to inform the driver. The engine speed is not reduced automatically and the full engine power can still be used if required in emergencies.

Doesn't answer the question, but it did get me wondering; what emergency requires me to hoon my car withing 60secs of starting???

I had an RS4.

I once had to get out of the way of a BIG accident and in doing so had to stamp on the throttle and boumnce it off the limiter.

I got away with it by inches.

I would not have been too impressed has the car decided to call time at 7000rpm.................!!!!
