Do I extend the warranty?
Discussion
Can't believe that 2 years is almost up since buying my 997. The letter has dropped through the post offering an extended warranty. The car has had these problems over the 2 years - oil level sensor failed, blown side light bulb, under trays damaged by a big puddle, nail in back tire, new battery, air con re-gassed. I've done approx 10000 miles in the 2 years and the last independent service revealed a mechanically immaculate and dry engine with nothing to call anything on the error log. So it's £216 for the dealer to perform the 111 point check, plus the cost of anything they deem to need replacing, plus £1840 for the 2 year warranty. What do you reckon chaps?
Just keep the money aside, these porsche guys are earning gazzillions on 997 paranoia, mainly due to these forums,If they say your car is sweet take their word for it and save your money,You obviously take great care of your car and keep it well maintained, and if it goes belly up in five years you have saved nearly 10k to get it rebuilt.
Just to counter above my 997 C2S had the dreaded bore score and I was extremely lucky to have an honourable dealer who took the car back.
I was firmly in the 'it will never happen to me' camp too but was unfortunately proved wrong.
Personally I would take the warranty purely for complete piece of mind.

+1 for renew. I've used the warranty and other cars and it has saved me money. If anything goes wrong I'm not messing about trying to get a cheap fix somewhere and so all the history is OPC. You may be able to wangle the 111 point check for free especially if the car is due for service (arguing that there is overlap on some inspection items).

you mention, I would have been surprised if OPC would pay for anything except the oil level sensor as all the others are consumables or accidental damage. Therefore, a total warranty bill in excess of £2k (incl the 111 point check) for a sensor does not seem good value.I think the car usage also impacts whether warranty needed or not.....I've had to call Porsche assist ( included in warranty ) three times in past year due to non starting fault. Every time a new car was delivered to my home within 90 minutes of calling to give me quality transport. If you "need" a car this is all part of the warranty. Also if not buying warranty it would be prudent to be a member of a breakdown/ get you home service ...probably around £150 p.a. ...it all adds up. These cars can run up substantial bills quickly , electronic boards usually around £1500 each and there are many on 997's...a typical example. Being a gentle driver will be easier on the car but age catches up with everything whether used or not....you pays your money ( or not ) and take your chance...good luck whatever your choice...
As policy, I never take a warranty on anything unless there is a very specific reason. They are a profit making offering from the organisation selling them. You take one, in my view, where the cost of potential failure is something you couldn't bear. This is why we insure our houses for example, or insure against third party liability where the downside is millions. For some folk that catastrophic cost could be a few hundred pounds, for some much more. That's why some go for warranty/accident cover on phones or TVs, albeit value on those is dreadful.
Just my 2p, but with a car that is known as relatively reliable and with a known history I'd be thinking "bank the cash" and effectively self insure. If i do this across almost everything I buy I think of it as running my own mini insurance book and I'll likely experience a portfolio effect; whilst the washing machine might go bang, nothing else does so whilst washing machine warranty cover would have paid itself back, across my portfolio I'm still in profit as the 20 other things didn't.

My 997.1T MY2007 was coming to the end of its warranty life this year. However with the extension of the warranty period to 15 years I decided to put a further 2 years on the car but without the assistance. The car has 42k on the clock and I don't do many miles each year but for me it was worth the peace of mind. As part of the pre warranty check a leaking condenser was found so this was replaced and over the last couple of years the car has had a new starter motor and a new air con unit, new cd changer and a couple of other minor items changed. I don't have a decent Indy close to me so, overall, I am happy to spend the cash. And given that I might sell the car over the next 12 months it might help with the sale process.......
I'm definitely in the self funding route.
I took out a 2 year warranty extension at the end of 3 years, having owned the car from new. Well, it's coming up to 5 years and 60k now and all the mechanicals and cosmetics are spot on, save for a couple of really annoying niggles. The only service items have been tyres and brakes - even the dreaded mol battery (original) is still going strong!
The niggles were leaking headlamp units and a hairline crack in the front bumper, both of which Porsche refused to deal with under warranty. My OPC and Porsche experience really has reinforced my view that I won't be taking up the next extended warranty offer form Porsche (and will move to a recommended indie).
+1 that if it was a 997.1, I would be a bit more risk averse. Having said that, the cars history and your use of it will no doubt be a big factor in deciding the best route to go.
OP, whatever you decide to do, enjoy to the full what is a fantastic drivers car.
