Hi,
About 15 years ago, I worked for a company which gave me shares. I no longer work there. Over the years, I've had various bits of paper turn up which imply that the company in which I have the shares has changed name and ownership. The shares are basically worthless and haven't caused me any trouble so I've just let them exist.

Today, I've had a letter which is asking me to fill in a tax residence form which makes me wonder if the company is no longer based in the UK! To be honest, I would like to get rid of them but I don't think the company is listed / floated any more and so I don't think I can sell them through a broker.

I know nothing about shares and how to get rid of them. The letter tells me to ask my 'tax advisor' any questions smile
I don't have a tax advisor as I've always worked PAYE.
I don't want to spend hundreds getting advice for shares that aren't worth anything but obviously I want to do the right thing.
I vaguely remember something about Capital Gains tax being applicable but I don't know what sort of time limit applies.

I don't even know what sort of tax advisor person to look for! I would be grateful for any advice about what to do.

Thanks!

What's the company? A quick google may answer some of your questions as to whether they are still listed and where.

Yes, and under what sort of share scheme did you acquire the shares? It's possible they are tax free in your hands.

If you post full details on here you'll probably get an answer without having to pay any advisers. But you can usually find out a huge amount simply by phoning whichever office has asked you to complete the tax residence form. By the way, the form sounds pretty standard stuff these days.

Thanks guys, yes I have found out some more information. Looks like I can sell them after all.
Much appreciated!
