Need to make sure the oily bits, breather pipes etc are in good nick before adding more boost.

Oh and sort front brake disks out, i'm used to a tiny hot hatch with uprated front brakes that actually stops.

The saab is like a really heavy fast thing in comparison.

It relies on more horsepower/torque the clio relies on less weight more revs.

Yeah i looked at your garage.

My clio hasn't really lived up to it's french reputation, other than the airbag light randomly coming on it just works.

Has kw coilovers and bigger front brake discs and with it being the cup it's very light weight, awesome on b roads a 'mare on motorways.

That noise under load could well be the idler belt/pulley, fairly cheap to have changed, had the same issue apparent on both my 9-5's in the first week of owning them!

I'll add that to the list to check at the garage on tuesday.

This could quite easily go from being a shed thread to spending far more than the cars worth.

I only want to renew/replace things that are unsafe or could lead to the engine lunching itself.

The boot is likely a worn wiring harness in the rear.

Alarm service is likely a faulty battery in the sounder.

Engine light could be plenty - one of the nastier ones being Throttle Body (cost of replacement same as the car - hopefully you can get them refurbed by now).

The throttle body needed a cleaning when it was mot'd, if that's the culprit i'll be getting a used one off the net for around £40.

The garage said the same re the alarm service warning , the biggest issue isn't the alarm though it's the boot locks/unlocks as your driving and it's annoying, the alarm i'll just get them to disable.

Oh well the saabs been dropped of at the saab garage ready for tomorrow.

There going to give it a good once over and phone me before doing any work.

The mechanic said it would be worth doing the breather hoses as there the originals , i also quizzed him about remaps and the diesel air intake mod and he said to avoid it due to the high mileage on the engine and more importantly clutch/gearbox.

I paid 650 for my 9-5 Aero on 163k miles and then had a remap, then 4k later the bottom end went. I guess it was on its way out anyway. Rebuilt with a 9000 bottom end and stage 5 project is nearly complete, just needs some tweaking now.

Update time -

So the sumps been dropped and the oil was in a pretty bad way .

It turns out the big end has previously gone and has been replaced but what they haven't sorted is the cause , a shagged oil pump.

The oil pump has to come from Sweden so looking at 5 days before it gets to the garage.

The pumps not expensive or a big job to fit and the garage say they think it'll be around £500 for the sump drop and supplying the pump.

So the £500 saab will become the £1000 saab.

Better than needing a bottom end though, and I guess that's why the car was £510. Also I would hold off before winding up the boost for a while. How were the other issues? Anything else noted?

that is problem with BB cars.

the purchase price can double. I've had my fair share of bad luck as well.

I would seriously look at your options as sometimes spending money can become never ending.

Sometimes better to cut losses.

I bought a 800 Octavia TDI so far spent about 900 quid on it but has done 11k miles and not broken down yet. In hindsight should have kept my Seat Ibiza Fr as I ended up losing a grand on a 406 HDI before the Octavia , so last year was an expensive year.

I'll spend around £500 on the repairs but not much more as i still have my clio cup to fall back on and only bought the saab as a folly.

IMO your head is right. The bottom end is toast, only a matter of time.

Only alternative is to find a complete donor engine, but that will cost to do the swap. Or flog it cheap to someone who relishes the spanner job.

Do these have a oil thermostat that could be changed?

sounds stupid question but they did us the correct oil. oil pressure is the lowest at tick over so only needs a few variances somewhere to cause the light to go on.
