Hi,

I decided to bring the Porsche into work yesterday afternoon as the weather looked nice. I seem to remember a dull clunk sound as I overtook a lorry on my way back to the office - didnt think anything more of it.

On my way home however, I noticed that the speedo was sat at zero...

Whats the most likely cause / issue?
And how much is this little inconvenience likely to cost?

Dom

Hi, Dnt know what might be the cause of your troubles. but if it is the speedo itself that is at fault and its a VDO unit you could send it to these ppl.
www.paspeedo.com/.

After some fool broke his speedo recently he sent it there and they did a great job. Official VDO repair center. Cost around $175 dollars and took around a week. But mine needed quite a few parts replacing after I broke the movement

another recomendation was north hollywood speedometer.

Sorry dont know of anywhere in uk that will repair a speedo.

I tried that hoping it was just a bit cold or something, but it didnt spring into life

The main problem I have is that having several speed cameras on the road my house is on - Im going to have to travel at snail pace everywhere 'just in case'.

Find out what your revs/1000 mph are and go off your rev counter while you wait to get it fixed....

Good plan, although it always feels like you are going slower than you actually are...

Anyone got ant approximate speed/revs stats for a 89 Carrera handy?

Road Angels and the like are handy for getting an accurate speed

After sitting in a stop-start traffic jam for an hour or so, the speedo on my 993 got stuck at zero as well. It came back to life when I did a full-bore standing start up to a 'decent' speed

Presumably the mechanism had got stuck, and the high rate of change of speed put enough force into the speedo to free it up. May be worth a try.

If something's actually broken, though - it's more likely to be the speedo cable than the mechanism itself. These can be an awkward pain to replace, though I've never done a 911.

Hey Cyber,

This morning I reversed the car out of the garage - set off on my merry way and 'whadayaknow'...Its working again!

Must have been a cold thing or something as I originally hoped! Not ideal but better than an expensive cable replacement etc!!!

I believe this can be a common problem on 3.2's. Had a similar intermittent problem on a club sport. Fixed by installing a new electronic sensor (screw in type) to the side of the gearbox. To diagnose see if a friendly indie will lend you a spare speedo and try it for a day or two. If it still shows the fault it’s not likely to be your speedo but the sensor. (Sensor was about £47+vat (I think)

I'll mention it next time she goes in to see the chaps at Autowerke (Norwich).
