A friend of mine was driving when he felt a severe pain in his wrist. He looked down and saw this sticking out.

I suppose I should've qualified the question by saying the sting like object under the sellotape on top of the protective cover of an iPad 2

So, let me get this straight... this "friend" of yours was driving along, felt a pain in his wrist, looked down and there was an ipad attached to him via a thorn-like object secured by a strip of sellotape?

All sounds a bit unlikely to me.

Has he ever had electrical equipment attach itself before?

My friend is like that. He seems to attract electrical equipment.

I just searched "hornets sting" on google images. Bad move. I feel very queasy now

But hornets & wasps don't leave their stinger do they? Could be a bee I guess...

A killer bee perhaps however my friend was still "alive" when I last saw him.

Either he feels the pain of having an ipad..

Or, that looks like a grass seed, they have a tendency of just sitting in your skin, and then jabbing into you painfully when they feel like it. Wrong time of year for dry grass seeds though..
