Just watching the practice, and wondered if the rear wheel fairings are a safety feature or just this years styling?

I'm out in Indianapolis for the 500 and the place is buzzing. Everywhere is way busier than it was for last year's race. 320,000+ people going to the track tomorrow should be interesting.
