Strange, very occasional misfire on perfectly running car

My 400HC seems to be running very sweetly at the moment, no shunting in town at low speeds, instant throttle response; all the things that it seems high lift cam HC owners spend good money on to achieve with mods.
However, without warning, say 20-30 mins into a drive, it will hiccup a few times, say for about a minute or two, and then settle down again. The rev counter doesnt bounce nor is there a backfire, just small hiccups.
Before I go replacing everything that passes a current (HT leads, cap, rotor, coil and ignition module) is there anything that can sit around letting the car run so well for most of the time that then pops up and ruins it for everybody and then goes away again?
The leads were new about 6 months ago, no extenders (socks), but the rotor arm, cap coil and module I dont know how old they are.

doesn't sound like an ignition or earthing issue to me as it doesn't get worse and goes away?
I would look at the fueling, when was the fuel filter last ACTUALLY changed? (so often garages charge for it and DON'T do it!)
also check for debri or water in the fuel tank and also that the baffle plate hasn't come loose obstructing the pickup. another thing to check is on early fuel tanks they had a gauze filter in the tank at the outlet pipe which can get clogged up.

I changed the filter myself a couple of months ago, and had removed the tank and pump when I did a full body lift.
A couple of things I am possibly suspecting though is the pump and the earth to the pump, although I haven't a clue how to check them as the problem isn't there nearly all of the time.
Water in the tank, how?
