the clutch plate on my 97 4.2 is nearing the end of its life and i am told that the bell housing etc needs to be changed to suit the new type clutch cos the old one is no longer made.

is this actually the case or do any after market suppliers make a clutch plate im thinking of race specialists etc

does anyone know of a supplier?

think you can get it relined. Search the forum. Sure this has been mentioned before.

From what I know, which isnt alot as most people will say, you need the later 4.5 flywheel and bell housing.

The clutch on a Cerbera is already a multi plate racing clutch by AP Racing, I think. The earlier one fitted to the 4.2 is now no longer on the shelf so you need to upgrade to the later type.

I read (somewhere on here) that the clutches are also fitted to some Corvettes. So it may be possible to find an alternative to sticking with TVR/AP and changing bellhousings etc.

Just sent the center plates for my early 4.5 to be relined and got back 2 brand new ones instead!

Just to let you know Jellie, Austec have just replaced my clutch, and from what I can make out, the 'original' size clutch is not manufactured by AJP anymore - so it needs a new Bellhousing too

Only the very very very first bellhousings need to be changed .. all intermediate bellhousings can just be machined, and all flywheels can be machined to fit the later clutches too .. saves you a heap of wonga.

Getting a clutch plate relined is not difficult. There are a number of companies that do this.

Just because your dealer suggests you go for the later model, doesn't make it the only choice.

I recently changed a gearbox in a V12 BMW. New clutch plate was £550!. I had it relined for £68.

Cost of reconditioned gearbox was £4800 + vat. I got it reconditioned for £120, and fitted for free.

I'm just having my cluch replaced including bellhousing& slave etc (97,4.2car)cost is about £1500!!!!

Joospeed knows one - or go to your local Motorfactors/Clutch centre and ask.
Point of interest; I sent mine away (with AP Racing stamped on them) and got 2 brand new ones back with out the stamp! They look identical but are slightly thicker linings, so you have to `modify` the slave cylinder slightly to compensate!!

If any of you guys still have the original clutches on your aerly 4.2's you can take out the 4 paddle clutch plates and send them to the nice men at AP Racing (who made the plate in the first place) who will reline them for £48 plus VAT. Yes that figure is correct and alot cheaper tahn either a new plate or bellhousing etc,

The down side is that it takes 3 weeks and no you can't jump the queue by offering them a bung-I know because I've tried.
