Fire Extinguishers !!

Exactly the reason I keep a fire extinguisher on the floor behind the drivers seat.
I was wondering, does anyone else keep one in their TVR?

Pretty sure my company no longer has manual extinguisher's. Policy I now follow. I believe the idea is get away and do not try to fight it.


We were taught how to fight under bonnet fires, for example, in years gone by but not anymore.


I do have one in the boot but I figure if I can get to that safley then it not me on fire.

I seem to remember an article in Sprint years ago. It was from a fireman who was called to a Lotus fire. Occupants OK but they took a few minute to get there and it was welded to the tarmac and not much left.

Talk about walking around with my eye shut. Kicking myself up the @rse now.

For some reason me old brain cells have been blind to this but in the old Vixen I had a fire trace (?). Bottle under the bonnet and the pipe arranged around the engine bay. Worth it? I suppose so.

Also how do the tanks fare on a parcel shelf in the sun. No other place to put it.

I keep mine in the boot, so that in case of fire, I can calmly exit the car, walk around to the boot, right to where the fuel tank is...

Ideally you want to be able to operate it while strapped into the driver's seat.

My Tuscan was destroyed by fire from the engine bay (luckily no one was hurt and I wasn't driving) but bear in mind the electric release to the boot won't work without power! Keep the extingisher in the cabin would be my advice - 3 minutes of fire is enough to write of your pride and joy - I know from bitter experience.

Got a 2.4l hand held which just fits behind the drivers seat in the Wedge. Ideally I'd like it fixed to the floor, but it's just a bit too big. Not sure about the parcel shelf - I'd always be concerned that it would fly out of its mount in an emergency stop / crash and hit someone.

Keep two in my mudaneo.. but none in tuscan...hmmm.. clearly need a rethink there.

seriously worth having for 10 quid though.

10 years ago I had an MR2 mk1 and the engine caught fire... had driven for ages before noticing (mid engined)... folk were overtaking me, pointing at me.. I just thought they liked the car :-)

It was only after too many people were doing this that I turned round and saw flames licking out the engine cover.

stopped at side of road... carefully opened engine cover and rear bulkhead was on fire. Soon put out with fire extinguisher and continued my journey. Without it the car would definately have went up in flames. All for the want of a 10 quid fire extinguisher.

But.. if you are gonna do this.. know how to use it.* I'd suggest looking up info on fighting fires on the net, then buy 2 extinghishers.. use one on a test fire. Then you won't be faffing around trying to work out how to pull the pin out when it matters.

*luckily I used to be in a private fire brigade so was trained up to full brigade FF standard :-)
