Ban lorries?? Great idea!
Discussion
With some PHers calling for HGV's to be banished from our roads forever, thought something I stumbled across might be of interest.

Its a bit long winded and dull on the whole, but scroll through to Table 6 on page 21 which pretty much sums up the consequences. All in less than a week, scary.

You have to be brain dead to think that doing that is going to work . It's the kinda w*nker that thinks that, who would be posting here that he can't get this or that and there's nothing in the shops etc etc etc
Trucks don't make wasted journeys. It costs a fortune to do so and woulndt do any good.Do you think they are just out for a drive for the fun of it ? How much time spent in your car(s) is unnecessary and clogging up the roads, and yet some t
t thinks the first thing to go is the trucks ...not very well thought out.

I think what would be good is to try and get more long distance freight on to rail or ship at an earlier point. Maybe have local distribution points and rail in between.
Also, do like some of Europe and get the lorries off the road at weekends and bank holidays.
Far too much like common sense...
On a serious note, why aren't trains used more for long distance stuff? Is it much more expensive?

Because there isn't the capacity on the rail network. I remember a company that makes concrete blocks in Knottingley, Yorks sends a trainload of blocks to there depot at Biggleswade, if they miss their slot, the train can be stuck for hours waiting for another gap to appear in the timetable.
Just a couple off the top of my head....
If the rail system could cope (which it can't) with a doubling of freight, it would make <5% reduction in road freight.
Distribution would involve two additional transers of goods (on to, and off of the train)
Companies would require satellite distribution centres instead of centralised.
