Does anyone else get as desperately annoyed as I do that such a lovely looking, sounding and driving (once in a blue moon) car is basically ruined by small niggling problems?

No, I'm continually amazed that I'm in a position to drive such an awesome car, getting dirty hands once in a while is a small price to pay.

Fix the problems. Take the car of the road for a month or two, make a list of what you don't like, and fix them. It's never really finished, but I made fantastic gains this winter. My main niggle was a nasty squeak from the transmission tunnel, it turned out to be the chassis attachment bolts up behind the radio, now it is much quieter. For £700 I did the following:- New radiator and repaint all cooling pipes; powder coat rocker covers and brackets (generally all I could get off); new alternator; refit radio (4 times before it was right); remove immobiliser and other abortive wiring; refit bonnet with nice gaps; re-work switch panel, putting switches on the outside (looks nicer to my eye); remove and repaint front suspension and uprights,; new brake hoses and pads; repaint front chassis; four new tyres and manually polish wheels; new cerb TP. It now drives beautifully. Perhaps in a few months I'll have to do it again! Perhaps I should get a life.

Sadly as we have been told before, they were cheap!
I am quite suprised mine performs as well as it does after 15 years, though it is,and has always been, well maintained on the whole.
TVR cut some corners when they were built that can't readily be un-cut later.
I have thought to myself that I could be lavishing all this time and money maintaining something really special that really turned heads, but I quess I could not drive that every day and could not have afforded it in the first place.
I love my S, but there are times when I look at the list of things I would like to do,and know it will not happen!
Keeping up with the little niggles is enough let alone the thought of full body off rebuild. That is a dream... but from there I would start again.

You could say that it is this kind of thing that differentiates a classic brittish hand built sports car from a modern eurobox. I have only ever opened the bonnet on my Audi to put windscreen washer in! but I look forward to the weekend when I can drive the S.

I always wanted to learn more about car mechanics, and this is a great way to find things out for yourself, rather than paying a garage all the time... OK so my car might not be perfect (far from it!) but it's mine, and I am learning more about it daily.

Lastly, if they did not have so much 'character' what would be the point of a Piston Heads forum on them.. and then none of us would know each other

Good point Ian!
And just look over at the Griff and Chimera sites to see the postings on there ...troubles everywhere!
We get off lightly I reckon!

they might be cheap but that makes them very simple. Far less things to go wrong.

Nah, the small niggling problems are usually easy, it's the big ones that are a pain (rusted through outrigger anyone?).

Why once in a blue moon??? life is for living and Tiv's are for driving.... mine has been out this week in torrential rain and snow storm... better to drive it than to leave it in the garage for 3 weeks then wonder why it plays up when you go to start it... IMHO

Once in a blue moon is when I can drive it properly, and how I want to. My S is my only car and daily driver, but it's at the weekends that I want roof down, full on country road blasts.

Only once in a blue moon at the moment because it's been spending more time waiting to be fixed. It's been one of those times recently where everything has gone wrong at once
