Surround speaker options?

New gaff and surprise surprise all my old kit doesn't really fit, but then it is 15 years old so no great loss, but does still work fine for what I actually need.
Got the standard compromised living room, TV naturally sits in the corner, and wood floor that I can't easily get any cables hidden under and a big stone fireplace that doesn't look like it's budging to run cables round.
I'm not an AV hardcore fan, I just want a bit of bass rumble from movies and enough sound to fill the room, 19.5' long x 12' wide.
My dads recently gone the soundbar/sub route, and it's probably good enough but his room is about half the size.
My old kit was a DVD player/surround, if I can carry on using the DVD part then that's fine, or do I take the chance to upgrade it all.
Really don't have a clue on the current tech, so point me in the right direction before I end up looking like the bloke in the Not the Nine O'clock News Hi-Fi sketch.
