What is the general consensus on this? It's my personal opinion that officers should be selected on merit regardless of ethnicity. Will quality be watered down in order to recruit more BAME officers because we "need to"?

I can see where BAME officers being deployed would have advantages.

Who is Carinaman? Other than my Dad/Mum, obviously?

Have we not been through all this before?
In the end it was decided that it was prejudice and therefore illegal.
I seem to remember some white english applicants complained to the Equal Opportunities Commission.

Shock horror.... black and asian people dont want to join the police and the police cant make them.

Perhaps Keith Vaz could look at the lack of diversity in the house of commons maybe

I'm not sure. This is a very recent article though

I think it was in the 90s the last time this was tried .
More suitable candidates were ignored in favour of filling quotas .
It was at this time that positive discrimination was being pushed but was eventually challenged in the courts .

You are correct, it was in the 90's, at least it was in GMP. I attended a meeting at Sedgley Park in 1992 where we were asked what we thought about lowering the entry standards to encourage ethnic recruits.
Our opinions were pretty much unanimous, it should be the same for everyone.
I later realised that there must have been some exceptions allowed in to the job.
