This post is prompted by two recent things.

A post here referring to something like "saggy titled hemp mothers of Totnes" and a Facebook acquaintence joking that his wife had gone "all Totnes" on him.

So what's up with the place? Is it some sort of hippy commune?

They like to think they're a little bit more enlightened than everyone else, but it's not really worth a visit to find out. On the 'Welcome to Totnes' sign at the edge of town someone's written underneath 'Twinned with Narnia'. I think the local council actually believe it.

I have spent a fair bit of time in Totnes. I really like it. Yes it is full of hippies, but its really lovely. Great farm shops, pubs, scenery etc etc. I wouldnt want to live there though.

My outlaws live in Totnes and I love the place.

Half of the locals are wired to the moon tbh which makes it an interesting place...

Lived there for a few months, 95% of the people living there are hippies, they believe all the hippy stuff etc.
You can sell all sorts of rubbish over there if it's 'organic' or 'home-made'.
It's a reasonably pleasant place to live/quiet if not expensive for what it is.
I remember walking through the town one day & some woman, who i reckon had to either be off her cake on something, or was drunk/homeless, was selling 'gong showers' for £4.50 a go.
I did wonder what it was, so hung around, someone came along, gave her the money & she proceeded to walk around them hitting a gong, odd indeed!

We call em 'TQ9ers' down here.

Most people who are Totnes born and bred are lovely in my experience. What makes it a bit of an odd place is the wealthy dropouts who accumulate there and give gong showers, invent the Totnes pound (a local currency for local people), put 'twinned with Narnia' on the town sign and all the rest of it.

They're a bit cliquey and 'normal' Devonians think they're a set of tts.
