I have been posting about a change to Ferrari but as you can see I still love my Porsche.

So, can I now have some input from the TT and GT3 owners. I use my car as a weekend toy but also for a bit of normal use. I like the car but desire a bit more sparkle so looking for an upgrade, so thoughts on both please.

TT - faster but is it 20k more sparkle than the plain C2, is very day to day which is good, will this depreciate like my C2?

GT3 - Sparkle, Sparkle, can I live with this as a road car, can I cary bikes and not look like an idiot, track days could be fun, how tough as a weekend plus car.

Need some advice from thoes who have had both for a while.

I, like you, looked at Ferrari this time last year. At that time I had a Maserati 3200 and was considering a 996 Turbo, Ferrari 550 or 360. I've always wanted a Ferrari and was sure that once I had driven one I'd have to have it regardless of cost. However I found them a bit easy to drive and felt the 996 Turbo was more sporty - I was very suprised.

Then I drove a GT3...Wow! I had to have it. It really is a sports car in the old fashioned sense whereas the others have a much wider brief. I use mine all of the time and every trip is special.

When I read your Ferrari post I thought - "this guy needs to try a GT3".

Mojo,

This will end up being a BIG thread !!!

I am fortunate to own one of each at the moment, althought the Turbo is a Cab.

Bottom line

TT = The ultimate road car, especially in the wet when it will blitz nearly anything, for me the thrill is just not quite there, as i don't like the way the power seems to be a bit all or nothing, and prefer normally aspirated.
It will still be a good track tool, but although the power delivery is massive, it's not as nimble through the twisties as i would like.

GT3 = Massive sense of occasion when driving on the road, as it as a pure pure drivers car, in normal set up mode can be as quick as anything out there, but only if you know what you're doing, it needs a lot more driver involvement than the turbo.
Can be a bit of a handfull in the wet, but you'd expect that.

On track, it's awesome, and if set up properly is one of the fastest most rewarding cars out there, with a bomb proof engine.

Both totally awesome cars, but both are better at their own game than the other.

This has been discussed many times on here, and i think the best question to ask, is, is a turbo a better track car than the GT3 is a road car.

Can't decide that one yet myself !!!!

In the answer to your first question, is the TT worth the £20K over the C2 - absolutely!!

TT - totally useable everywhere, devastating power. Downside is that the power is so accessible that you'll get used to it relatively quickly.

GT3 - a bit tricky always, devastatingly quick if you can handle it - you will always feel like there is more to learn and will therefore not get as bored with it as quickly. If you learn to drive it quick then you'll be able to handle anything.

Mojo, I agree with all the previous comments about the relative merits of the 996TT and GT3.

I considered both along with a 355 as a replacement for my'89 911 3.2 about 18 months ago.

The GT3 got my vote in the end because (a)GT3's are made in fewer numbers than TT's and should hold their value better (b)the noise a GT3 makes is more inspiring than a TT's and(c)the GT3 just felt that little bit more special.

The TT is a awesome all weather supercar and is clearly the better bet as a daily driver. I'd love to have one parked in my garage next to the GT3 if had the funds.

I've had my GT3 just over a year and can't see myself selling it for a very very long time. The looks, the engine note and wonderful recaro seats make every journey special though I don't think I'd wan't to use it as a daily driver.

Geoff

PS Like you I considered a Ferrari. I hired a 355GTS for a weekend and I had mixed feeling when I handed it back. Loved the looks, the noise and the lovely gearchange but was less impressed with the vague steering, poor build quality and the vast amounts of rain that poured in through the passenger window soaking my female travelling companion.

I use my 996tt each day and do about 18k miles/year.

Its taken me a long time (10 years longer than I'd hoped) to get to owning once of these cars, and I've owned a lot of quick cars on the way, so have quite a bot to compare it to.

I have to say that the turbo simply blows-away everyting else I've ever had. The power is so readily accessible (and never-ending) and the car is just so much fun to own and drive that I don't know what else I'd ever want to have

............except maybe my old (200k miles) pugeot 405 turbo estate when I want to do 48 mpg instead of 22! ) yeah, and I know 22mpg is pretty good too !!

I owned till Feb a MK1 GT3, basically a great car a true racer. I didn't utilise it enough on track. So I found and tested a TT and part exchanged them. The ride is a little more forgiving, the added creature comforts make that longer journey more bearable to. In the best of worlds keeping both cars would be the ideal situiation, but that wasn't going to happen. I think I have done the right thing, I can still do my 3 or 4 track days a year and be happy.

The prices are getting stupid now, a little over £50K gets you a sub 20K mile TT..now that is a lot of car for the money.
