Gah! Road Vs Adventure/Gravel bikes
Discussion
budget is set, £800ish
Thought I had it down to these
https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-arkose-2-2016...
Both felt strange to start with, the stack heights were around 30mm higher than my Allez.
Ride nice and very stable, not that radical, comfy.
or this

noticeably sharper, felt a little short in the frame, a tape measure showed a 80mm stem so a 90/100mm would be an instant fix.
Then S10GTA moans about how he hates his CX for commuting and people then start showing me very tempting disc braked road bikes, inc with a carbon frame = lush.

and Evans have this lovely looking ally bike as well
https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-dolomite-4-20...
My thought process was run 28mm slick in spring and summer, and a 32/35 winter tyre with full guards in winter.
As you know most road bikes it is a 25mm max if you want to run guards and that is something I don't like 25mm
So back to the Adventure/Gravel bikes.
any other suggestions for a disc brake equipped road bike that has clearance for guards with 28mm fitted?
Or some other Adventure/Gravel bikes.
the minimum group set spec would be the 2016 Tiagra 4700 and the TRP Spyre brakes if possible.

This is the 2016 version of my bike. Very impressed and has all the mounts and 105 and spyre discs. http://www.hargrovescycles.co.uk/bikes/cyclocross-...
I have been banging on about my new disc equipped Diverge on this board recently
There is also a lot of PH love on threads passim
Its everything I wanted and comes with factory 28mm slicks, with the Spesh mudguards on mine theres loads of room for bigger
It rides superbly on the road and is pretty handy on less technical bridleways albeit slower than my CX bike*
On your average UK B road its like a limo compared to my carbon race bike and is not actually that much slower - I plan to use it as winter club bike and have no concerns, mine has a rack as well as full guards and takes panniers
So far very impressed
They start at £800 and go up to the stratosphere
Mine is aluminium, the test bike in my size was carbon and although lovely I couldnt justify the price for my needs
The Evans Arkose bikes also caught my eye as did the GT Grade and the Planet X London Road
Cheers

- CX bike is a weapon off road and much more capable than you would think in the dust and gloop but there is no way Id take it for a 100km road ride, it doesnt take mudguards and its canti brakes are crap in comparison - horses for courses
My CX is a Specialised Crux disc.
35mm tyres on I take it in the woods. 28 Contis and it will eat up a 100km ride in comfort.
I remember reading a review saying it was a race focussed CX bike.
The lines are very blurred between some endurance road bikes/CX/gravel/commuter. Much of a muchness.

yeah, the CX bikes are never going to be an option for me ever
I have the long body/short legs, so most bikes that fix my leg length and standover, nearly always feel little to short in the top tube, hence I always need to have my seat back and slightly longer stem.
CX's are by their nature have short top tube, there so that equals a nope.
Gravel/adventure its is, both the pinnacle and Norco have been ridden, the pinnacle hands down fits me very very well.
Chester Evans has the Jamis in my size, I think a test ride is in order on Saturday and then choose.
The Cube 29er has out of gears, I'm cranking 36/12 in top gear all the time now, so it can't go faster and the winds always in my chest acting like a sail.

wow, the Jamis and the Diverge have nearly identical geo.
Jamis 54 (spesh)
TOP EFFECTIVE 551 (547)
HEAD ANGLE 71.5˚ (72)
SEAT ANGLE 73˚ (74)
CHAIN STAY 430 (415)
WHEEL BASE 1023 (1001)
BB DROP 72 (73)
HEAD TUBE 132 (134)
STANDOVER 776 (776)
STACK 565 (565)
REACH 378 (380)
all they have done is stretch the Jamis's rear triangle a bit to make the wheel base longer.
I bet frame material aside they ride very similar.
but so do the Norco and Pinnacle and they feel very different.
difference I can see there is the Norco has a straight up seat tube and a 100mm stem, and the Pinnacle a set back seat post and a 90mm stem.
