I have owned my Buell since June 2005, never had any problems with insurance or anything else come to that, I haven't used it for around 2 years due to having other toys. I've just insured & taxed it again & I've just got a letter from my insurers saying that it's been a write off! I've just done an online vehicle check & it comes up as written off on 19/04/02, the date of first registration is 24/03/02, which means that it may have been involved in something when it was nearly new. My understanding is that cat B vehicles can be broken for parts only, so what should I do now? I have no intention of getting rid of the bike & it has no signs of any serious damage, rides perfectly etc. I'm just a bit concerned that if something were to happen the insurers wouldn't pay out.

Going by the ABI industry agreement, yes, but that's never been foolproof - especially as long ago as 2002. Since the VIC was removed, DVLA won't issue a V5C for a CatB any more.

Not a lot you can do. Unless you've got a time machine.

Probably just as well, really, since it's effectively unsellable in the UK.

They'll pay out the market value. Which, for a CatB, is somewhere around bugger all, since no buyer could ever register it in their name.

Did the CatB not come up when you HPI'd it when you bought it? After 11yrs of ownership, I'm not sure you're going to have much of a claim against whoever you bought it from...

Really, about your only option - other than to keep it, ride it, and enjoy it for what it is - would be to sell it for export.

I'd guess at a clerical error.
As you said, a cat B should not be on the road.
A few phone calls should give you some answers.

With cars you get the insurance write off history on the V5, not sure about bikes although both show an independent importation.

Have you tried contacting the previous owner? You might need to Google them - often a reason to Cat B an otherwise Cat C (cosmetic) or cat D bike is the difficulty in speaking to the previous owner....

Bikes are different to cars in many respects - a bit of scuffage for the bike doesn't tell the full story of a bump.

Snorky, spank me otherwise.

Nothing comes up in a search of members, thanks for the other replies, I'm going to contact DVLA & see what they have to say, more worried about having the V5 revoked (can they do that?) as I've heard of a few people with modified vehicles that have had this happen & now have to go through BIVA.

The history does not add up so keep you current V5 and say it lost of the DVLA ask for it.
Lots of time on the phone to see what is going on. I would also say at that age it may have been done by the dealer. Has the number plate been moved to a new bike.
There is also the chanse to get a full report on the bike to prove it is road worthy.

Oops! Should be snorky782.
Hard to keep up with all the changes at my age.

Sell for parts or as said get a frame and swap the bits over. If you crash it and cause damage you may end up with quite a big bill otherwise.

I have been thinking about repairing a motorcycle for a while now, and recently I noticed there all cat b.
After my inspection I came to conclusion that it wasn’t professionally inspected and instead the person was too lazy. And I was wondering if it was possible to a re-inspected again
Is that a possible thing to do?

Sorry to revive an old thread. My mate's MT07 has been written off as CAT-B due to some frame damage for the incident I posted about in the Pictures thread while ago. Insurance has offered him the bike back for a steal (less than the Akro on it is worth).

A new frame runs about 1k - so add in a couple of bits and I think we can rebuild this bike fairly easily.

My question is: how does one go about registering the bike again when its re-built? If I got a new frame is this a relatively simple process? Then with the frame being replaced does it still count as CAT-B?

I think that the bike’s identity (i.e the reg no) will always carry the CAT B marker. It shouldn’t go back on the road. Build it as a track bike.

The identity is from the frame, if you buy a used (registered) frame then the bike assumes that identity - might be an option if such a frame is available.

No idea how it works with a new frame though?

Or get a secondhand frame and V5 from a non-writeoff bike.

Second hand frames seem few and far between, but that would be an option. I'd prefer a new frame.

Actually: seems pretty easy from here: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/rebuilt-ve...

Yes ,saves them the cost of binning it. As nobody can do anything with it, it makes sense for them to sod it off to him.
